If you're having trouble joining today, its because we're being attacked by an IP in Japan. It keeps sending bad packets and locking up the server. Since its not actually trying to connect, my I.P. redirects and firewalls don't stop it.
I'm on the phone now with my provider trying to get a complete I.P. block from their end.

They tell me that they can't do anything about it if the source isn't on their network. And its not even a real I.P. address assigned to someone, its just a node in Japan.
I'm probably going to have to buy a new router. This stupid D-Link won't let anyone connect to the server or see it in the game browser unless I put that computer in the DMZ. And there's no way to block an I.P. in the DMZ.
Anybody use a Linksys router and know if it will let you block I.P.s in the DMZ, or let you control what ports are open in a non-DMZ mode?

I'll see if I can find a Belkin tommorow. It seems to get good reviews for its menu system and ease of set up.

I was just curious, wasn't that packet-watching software supposed to be watching for things like this?
I would call the FBI and get them involved, but then again, you would have to put your "uploading" fun on hold for a while.... ;D

the belkin is very easy to set up.. you plug in the wires and turn everything on.. presto your done.
you may have a little more set up because your wanting to set your fire wall a little different than an everyday user. But it has a web page based interface were you can do all that stuff.
I got my router at wal mart.

I have a Linksys and USR...I find either to be quite configurable...you can open ports in the Linksys and not DMZ it..that is the way I run. All behind the firewall with port triggerring on...but I also run a software firewall.

The Mac OS has built-in firewall settings. I don't know what effect it would have on DOS attacks, though. I have the built-in Mac firewall settings disabled in favor of running Norton Personal Firewall. I have not changed my cable router and wireless router settings at all, but I presume they both came with some sort of firewall also set on.

The problem is that I need that computer to be pretty wide open so that players can join and so that status scans work. Otherwise the server doesn't show up on the browser lists.
I found a software packet filter that connects directly to the ethernet card output and scans every packet that goes through. I've got that set to block the packets from that I.P. address. So we'll see how it goes before I buy new hardware. The server hasn't crashed since I installed it last night, so that's a good sign. I hope running everthing through the filter doesn't slow down game communication (higher pings).
