hey lam, i was wondering if we could add a grappling hook to the server....or at least a hook on a rope that you have to swing to grab ahold of something....it should be that everytime you spawn 10 times per map, you would get a hook.....that way you can get places others cant unless they have the hook...giving you the advantage....then when you die you have to die 10 more times in order to get the hook.....or every 5 times would work too...think about it lam ;D

this would be a cool idea, i thought about it after some guys talked about how they were bored at night, shooting themselves across the map, and where one guy got on a building after blasting himself up there!! lol

I have played around with the idea of a grappling hook, but I would have to teleport the player to the hit spot of the grappling hook, and players would end up getting stuck in things. I haven't totally abandoned the idea, but I can't figure out a good way to make it work.

I'm sure you have thought of it already but I will toss it out there..
could just certain areas be accessible to the hook instead of players attempting to hook into places that will cause server problems or "getting stuck" problems?
Just an Idea.
on the concept of reward for every 5 or 10 deaths...
This in my opinion would not be a good thing.. then everyone would be trying to die to acquire the hook. It should be a reward for some kind of success. This way there is incentive to better ones playing style and skills to achieve the reward.

I like the idea of settling for certain areas that the hook would work. Of course, that eliminates the Gumby Patrol from finding new ways to use it

It would almost have to be a custom map made for it. Someplace with playable areas that aren't reachable in normal ways.

Just for fun, I made a teleporting weapon that would move you to wherever the projectile hit. It was funny shooting myself all over the map, but most of the time I got stuck in walls. I only see two ways to make this work:
-Thowable hook that has to hit a very specific target. That way I can control exactly where the player can go. Some of my map mods have teleports or lifts that let you get up to special places. Some of these could be replaced with a grappling system.
-Custom map specificly designed to make use of a grappling hook. I can't make custom maps, and I don't know any good mappers who would want to colaborate on a project like this (unless one of you is secretly a expert mapper).

could just certain areas be accessible to the hook instead of players attempting to hook into places that will cause server problems or "getting stuck" problems? After walking around in a few maps last night with my test teleportation weapon, and thinking about ways to restrict its use to particular areas, I came up with a solution. I've thought of a way to make it simple for players to use, not too difficult to script, and be fairly realistic in use. I'm going to develop this into a working mod.

I've thought of a way to make it simple for players to use, not too difficult to script, and be fairly realistic in use. I'm going to develop this into a working mod. Allright! I knew if I were patient, things would come to fruition! ........... I've even wondered if we couldn't have short-distance transporters, like Quake has, for moving around the big maps. And all this talk has made me think of another suggestion (but I don't know if it is doable). The same way that there are large portable machine guns that can be picked up, carried around, and then used, could there be a rope with grappling hook, that could be used to climb up to ledges, roofs, across gaps, etc? One or two of those per every player per map, or just available like the jetpacks are, could be a different balancing factor or just an enjoyable playable option. I am certain that Lamron, our Benevolent Dictator (hey, when do I get a title, too, huh, other than LP Member, like Resident Bard or Chaplain or Chief Target or something?) will have a knowing reponse to that.......... and ..... As usual, Lamron asks for input, we give him stuff, and then, when he's through laughing or shaking his head at the suggestions, some little nugget of a new gizmo/setting creeps out from under the newest Client Fix quite some time later. ....... GO LAMRON, GO!!!!!

LOL that's an OLD thread you're refering too, RedRock! Sometimes the idea comes long before my modding ability is equal to the task. At the beginning of that thread we were talking about the difficulties of making selectable full-auto/3rnd burst weapons, but I eventually figured that out and we've had those for a while now. Also, many things really were impossible before we had our own in-house expert modeler, AIGAD, here. ;D

Aigad is very good.. I really think he could make a living just designing graphics for game admins. I know this is what he is doing already as a job.. but I mean as in running his own web based business.

Well, Lamron, I personally wish you would occasionally fill us in on what you and Aigad are doing behind the scenes, and how much effort and time and expertise you're putting into it, so that we can properly appreciate exactly what is involved. As it is, suddenly we just get a new toy and a short reference to Aigad "making" it, but I have no idea what that means! You know, like when you did your do-over on that real-life weapon--we got to see the steps involved, the progress, the problems, and finally the end-result.
Just a suggestion, not really trying to create new work for anyone!
