you think that is bad...I live off of Highway 401...technically the busiest highway in Canada. A few years ago the police pulled over a vehicle speeding..he wasn't excessively speeding but the fact that he was playing a violin definitely caught their eyes. He was on his way to a concert and was rehearsing his solo....DUH!!!!..the other ones they have nailed are people who have fastened laptops to their steering wheels and are doing business reports on their way to work. The speeds on this highway are posted 100 km/h..roughly 60 mph...but the average is 120-130 kph..so anything to take your attention away is near fatal.

Bat, just thought it would be easier for you, since you live near there, but never mind, I'll look into it sometime next week when I'm off for Christmas.

It will be the Law Enforcement Agency (LEA) that investigated the crash. Could be Lawrence Co. Sherrif, Township Police (which one?), City Police (? Sharon, Butler?), or even PA State Police, all depending upon the kind of road where the crash occurred and local LEA agreements.
See my previous post, Bat--I'll try to make some calls next week about it when I find some time.

OK... I spoke on the phone today with Chief Morris of the New Castle PD (the actual agency who took the report of this accident.) Chief Morris explained to me that we could get a copy of the 6 to 8 page accident report for $15.00. When I explained to him why I wanted it, he volunteered to give me the pertinent details of the accident by phone. Here is what he told me: 1) Witnesses reported the bike (crotch rocket type) passing several cars on the highway at very high speeds. 2) The bike was traveling at a rate of speed that resulted in brake skid marks of 60 FEET or more before impacting the rear of the moving pickup truck. 3) The impact was so sever that the trailer hitch ball wound up in the engine block of the bike. 4) Death was instant for the bike rider, who described only as "a young man." 5) The impact was strong enough to break the welds that held the trailer hitch mounts to the truck's frame. 6) Before the vehicles dislodged from each other, the truck did drag the bike and victim 230+ feet. They know this from measuring the point of impact to the place of separation. There was no blood trail between these points. The Chief indicated that the bike and victim had to have eventually dropped from the truck's rear and did not continue to skid forward (possibly indicating that the truck stopped and then left after the truck and bike dislodged.) 7) The Chief also indicated that the driver of the truck, while not suspected to be at any fault in the accident, is being sought a few reasons. A) to make sure no others were hurt in the accident, B) to possibly discover facts not known about the accident, C) to try to provide closure for the dead man's family, and D) the obvious issue of leaving the scene of the accident which Chief Morris claimed "there was absolutely no way" that the driver could have been unaware about this rear impact.
He also indicated that another story will run on this accident tomorrow or Thursday in a paper called the New Castle News. The article will plead for witnesses who may know the driver of the truck to come forward. A reward is being offered for that information.
So it seems that the biker was completely at fault based on the physical evidence at the scene and witness reports both before and after the accident. It is a shame that a family has lost a young member, especially during this time of year.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like the truck driver may have been innocent of the collision, but guilty of something else and didn't want to talk to the cops. There's no excuse for that. The driver had no way of knowing the extent of the rider's injuries. Staying and calling for help might save a life. Surely that's more important than whatever you're running from.

In this case, the Chief of Police said the bike rider died instantly (based on what they saw at the scene.) He also said that the truck must have suffered some substantial damage to the rear, which may assist in finding the truck. IMHO, the driver ofthe pickup is a lowlife for leaving the scene because as you say, it is possible that a life could have been saved. Not likely, but possible. But irregardless of that, the lack of concern for a life is disgusting. I, like you wonder exactly why the truck driver was so eager to flee the scene.

Nice goin, Vince. That was good info, and useful, and well-reported. Don't you just love the intensity of good law enforcement people (such as Chief Morris), when they know they are being appreciated and listened to and know they are helping society? And I agree, it has been an interesting and intelligent discussion. The futility of the death, youth wasted, is what really angers me. I hope you guys all understand, I do autopsies on cases such as this so that everyone can know as much as possible about the death and injuries. The truck driver has a right to his best defense, if his stopping and trying to help couldn't have made a difference in the outcome of the death; the family of the biker has a right to know if the death was quick and without pain, or if the driver could have done something to save him; the bike maker needs to know how his frame held up or impacted the biker's body; the police and insurers want to know if drugs, alcohol, or disease contributed to or caused the crash or death, etc. I had one case some years back, for example, of a young man ejected from a car in a 2-vehicle collision, who was knocked unconscious when he landed on a grassy hillside, and he wound up with his neck severely flexed (bent to his chest) and couldn't breathe due to that and died, but my autopsy showed he had no injuries or diseases that should have killed him, yet no one would help him, including the paramedics who showed up and just looked as he died from positional asphyxia. I am truly independent in these cases and call it like it is. That means many times keeping an open mind, while the rest of the world is screaming bloody murder for what appears so "obvious" to them (but frequently is incorrect), until all the important facts are in. BTW, New Castle, PA is where the Warner Brothers got their start in the movie business. I used to live just a few miles from there and had one of my first SouthernBoyDrivingInRealSnowOnHillyRoadsInWinter experiences there (still shuddering!); it's a lovely little town. See www.visitlawrencecounty.com/warner_bros.asp .
