Scrap Windows altogether, and form an OS that eliminates all virus threats. My dad is trying to get a group of people to get a first run of an OS that does this. He uses crazy computer talk that I don't understand, but he claims it will eliminate all virus threats somehow. I'll see if I can get him to type up an overview for me.
Keep in mind, hes worked for Microsoft, apple, Ciridian (the company that most likely sends your check). So he knows how things work.

Forget the pie in the sky perfect Windows replacement that will still be Windows-like. Won't happen. I'll stick my with Apple. It works, doesn't get viruses, gets better with every OS version (not worse), and is available now. Sorry the truth hurts, but so be it.

Scraping Windows XP and starting over to eleminate virus threats is extreme overkill. I use Avast and Stopzilla and haven't had any security problems in years.
Any functionality that Vista adds could have been put into SP3 for XP. The fancy new OS was introduced to make money from people who would go out and buy something just because it was newer.
MAC probably even had something to do with it. With PCs loosing some of the market share, it makes sense that they would want to be perceived as being on the cutting edge of introducing shiney new things. Unfortunally, their execution of that plan left something to be desired.

[sarcasm]ya-but.... then Microsoft isn't making any new products to sell and that would be just awful.
Creating these new operating systems and scrapping older ones is how they make their money. Repairing an older XP with a SP3 only costs Microsoft money so that just wouldn't be fair....[sarcasm\]

I hate windows... but I hate whatever you call a mac os too, and linux, and unix (did I even spell that right). But we just have to make due with what we got, and the money we have to get it. But I still prefer XP over Vista... I'm finding out more ways that Vista sucks by the hour.
I haven't even seen SP3 in action yet, anything interesting or just more security upgrades?

I'm finding out more ways that Vista sucks by the hour. That was about my same time-frame finding those "!@#king Vista!" bugs too.

Right click on "My Computer" in the window that has popped up. Mouse down, hover over, and then left click on "Properties" in the pulldown menu that has appeared. This gives you a window called "System Properties." Read it. It will tell you the name of the OS you are using (Windows XP Professional, etc.) and the Service Pack installed (Service Pack 2, for example). Which SP shows? Lamron bets it is #1.
