I recently received a letter from BNY Mellon bank notifying me that they had lost a box of unencrypted backup media containing my personal info. www.bnymellon.com/tapequery/faqs.htmlI have never heard of this company or knowingly done business with them. Supposedly, some company I do have some financial relationship with shared my info with them for some legit purpose. This potentially effects millions of people, and I was not notified for several months after the incident (February). I guess there's not anything I can do to prevent companies sharing info and my data being bounced all over the world. I decided to be proactive and NOT be a victim of indentity theft. So I signed up for LifeLock today. ( www.lifelock.com ) LifeLock comes recommended by Rush, and using "rush" as the promo code gave me the first month free. Its $10 per month, or $110 per year. The peace of mind and reduction in credit card offers seems like a good investment.

Similar thing happened to me about a month ago. Some loan agency got my info for whatever reason, and someone hacked into their server and got a bunch of info. They advised me to keep an eye out on my credit report, and gave me a lifetime subscription to an online credit checking site. Luckily nothing has shown up yet... although my problems with capital one got reported to all three agencies more than a month before they should have, and the problems they reported were resolved due to their error. I'm havin a lot of fun with that...

Arguing with creditors about mistakes they made is about as much fun as arguing with your internet provider, only potentially much more expensive. I think they purposely hire the dumbest people they can, hoping that you'll just get frustrated and give up.

some one got hold of my capitol one card as well and bought some car parts in sweden. when capitol one looked at my credit purchases they realized it was out of character, so they phoned me and asked . when i said no, they cancelled the card and sent me a new one. didn't have to pay for the puchases either.
