I'm not trying to be a Mac evangelist here, but this is a very interesting topic of discussion, about what the computing future will look like in just 2 years, so I've posted just a little here, some of it just fun. ----------------------------- Yep, the new Mac Pro is a hot machine. I still don't know why it should be able to have four graphics boards in it, though--run 4 monitors at once? At $2500 (and still need keyboard and monitor), it's too expensive for me; I usually just get the iMacs (all-in-one systems) rather than the towers or even the Mac "mini." I'm right this minute trying to decide whether to get a recent iMac (not an intel machine), or the latest iMac (Macintel model), or wait for the iMac version of this Mac Pro (at 2/3 the cost, hence the possible wait), to replace the iMac my daughter just today took back to college with her. This is the MacWorld review mentioned in the video link Lost Child gave: www.macworld.com/ "Benchmarks: Mac Pro sets the mark The standard configuration of the Mac Pro outperforms its PowerPC-based G5 predecessors by a wide margin, helping to justify Apple’s 2005 decision to switch to processors from Intel. What’s more, the system powered by two dual-core 2.66GHz Xeon chips narrowly missed becoming the first machine to ever record a Speedmark score of over 300. In addition to the full lab results, you can also see some photos of the new machine as well as video of Jason Snell pulling some panels off the new Mac Pro."And as far as gaming with this new Mac Pro: www.macworld.com/weblogs/gameroom/2006/08/macprogames/index.php . Be sure to read about Cider (run Windows games on Mac WITHOUT running Windows!): www.macworld.com/weblogs/gameroom/2006/08/cider/index.phpAnd these ads are funny, if you haven't seen them. I especially like the Wall Street Journal one and the Connectivity ones: www.apple.com/getamac/ads/

So I bought the iMac 17 in. 1.83 GHz dual core intel today. For now I will let the kids and wife use it and I will stick with my old G5 iMac. Late next summer, after the dust has settled and daughter 2 goes off to college and takes one of my Macs with her, I'll see what the latest and greatest iMac/Mac Pro is get myself a new Mac then.

Here's an update from the front!!!
Well, the new intel Mac is up and running, and it is verra verra nice. Fast, too. Funny thing, though, it didn't come bundled with the archetypical Mac works program, AppleWorks, which every Mac I've ever bought before (back to 1984) came bundled with (in some version or incarnation--originally MacWrite, MacPaint, and MacDraw--for free, and if you bought MS Excel (orginally created for the Mac!), then you had the full suite, then it became ClarisWorks, then AppleWorks. Now the intel Macs have a trial version of presentation and layout software, Keynote 3 and Pages 2, respectively, the latter said by Apple to be the successor to AppleWorks. Nothing lost, though, my old version of AppleWorks runs just fine on the new machine, and MS Office for Mac 2004 runs well and opens the AppleWorks files just fine. There is a universal binary version of the software for my wireless mouse and for my Epson multi-function printer/scanner, so those two devices are doing just great!!! Eventually, I'll get around to trying Q4, COD2, and MOH on the new machine.

I'm...trying to be a Mac evangelist here... Are you affiliated with those young men that ride around on their bikes door to door trying to get people to convert to their OS ? Come and worship at the altar of the one true OS !!! Bow before the great Whizzy-Wig !!! Lift up your mice, and click unto him !!! Repeat after me: I bear witness that there is no OS but Apple and that RedRock is His servant and messenger. (for those of you in Rio Linda, Whizzy-Wig is WYSIWYG, or What You See Is What You Get, another Macintosh original and mainstay adopted by the computing world: A catchphrase from the old TV show Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In that became a desktop publishing byword, WYSIWYG (pronounced "whizzy-wig") refers to any technology that enables you to see images onscreen exactly as they will appear when printed out. As scalable screen and printer fonts have become more sophisticated, and as graphical user interfaces have improved their display, people have come to expect everything to be WYSIWYG. But it isn't always the case--and certainly wasn't in the 1980s, when this term was first applied. YOU GOTTA LOVE THE MAC AND ALL IT HAS BROUGHT US !!!). ;D
