Here's an interesting article about the new OS X Snow Leopard. gizmodo.com/5346418/snow-leopard-review-lightened-and-enlightenedWhat's interesting is that both MS and MAC have made moves toward what the average user really wants from a new OS. Win7 and Snow Leopard both focused on rewriting old code to optimize the responsiveness of the system, rather than just adding new things to it. There's several new cool UI improvements and features, but similar enough to the old OS that people don't feel like they have to start all over again learning something new. They both seem to be acknowledging that not everybody has the newest computer available, and are making the OSs more scalable. Meaning, you will see better performance on your old, nearly obsolete computer, while at the same time being able to make use of the hardware in your maximum-super-awesome cutting edge computer. Usually when using regular desktop applications, the GPU in your fancy gaming graphics card is sitting idle. Both new operating systems have the capability of putting it to work for math-intensive jobs (exactly what a GPU is best at). The new OS essentially IS giving you a hardware upgrade. However, none of these improvements or similarities will ever settle the PC vs. MAC wars! ;D

I actually mentioned the planned dual use of the GPU as a way the (then-) future Mac software would run things faster--many many moons ago I mentioned this--and got hooted down by PC users as saying that's not what the GPU was for and it would be a bad thing and they didn't want it. I just forget which forums I said it in (one of the gamer ones).
But now....
America's chickKENS...have come home...to ROOST!

If I was going too use it too game .. then NO I dont want the GPU memory utilized for base functions. But being a laptop, I do not game on them and would not mind.

Here's a nice review of Snow Leopard: www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/09_36/b4145000590949.htm?campaign_id=yhooMy personal iMac is not an intel machine, so this won't help me, but my wife's is, so I might get it for her. Not clear, though, if you have to have 10.5 before you get Snow (which is 10.6); all my machines are running 10.4.11, save my middle daughter's MacBookPro which is running 10.5.x (but she's at college, so I can't help her anyway). The upgrade from 10.4.x to 10.5 was in the neighborhood of $99, but 10.6 is only $39, so that's why I say that.

Yeah, it seems, as Lamron pointed out, that some sanity has reared its ugly head.
