I'd rather wait for the Ultimate version.

After forcing me to spend unnecessary money on upgrading all of my software just so I can use it on Vista, those jerks at Microsoft owe me the Ultimate version of Windows 7 free of charge.
I am still just a little bitter about that yet.

There's not really any reason to pay the extra for the Ultimate. All it gains you is Bitlocker (get TrueCrypt for free if you really need encryption), Virtual XP mode (not needed, you can run anything in XP or Vista compatibility mode if needed), and Language switching. I wavered between Premium and Professional, because Professional has Remote Desktop. I ended up buying Premium because all versions are physically present on the disk, and it is possible to alter it to install a higher version than your licence key specifies (like installing XP Pro from a XP Home disk). MS has also stated that you can upgrade your Windows 7 installation to a higher version at any future date, for a fee. So you can buy the cheaper one now and upgrade it later if you find you're lacking a feature you can't do without and can't be duplicated with free third-party software. Compare the versions here: www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/14422-compare-windows-7-editions.html

After looking at it, it seems I will want to go with premium also. If the home edition is like the Vista version, it won't include gpedit, and other useful features that I have grown accustomed to. I still have a year to decide though ;D I am very happy with build 7127 so far.

Does this diagram mean that the Premium version will not be compatible with "many XP productivity applications" ---> software designed to run on XP?

When I was running the beta I did not find any program that I have for XP that would not run.

When I was running the beta I did not find any program that I have for XP that would not run. I have also had no compatibility problems. So far I have had no complaints at all about the Win7 Beta and RC.

Silly, that chart means that Premium doesn't have "XP Mode". That is a virtual computer that runs XP, inside of Windows 7. Since its really running XP, you are a guaranteed that it will work. However, I have never needed this feature because you also have "Compatibility Mode". Occasionally a program will check what OS you're using and not recognize 7 and tell you it can't run. When that happens, Win7 offers to pretend like it is XP or Vista as far as that one program is concerned. Pick the one you know that program works in, and it will remember to use that mode every time you start that program. Its a system that works very well. Will very few odd exceptions, you should be able to use anything written for XP or Vista.

That make sense, even to me, I saw an ad today, I think it was NewEgg that had the Vista operating system on sale and part of the sales-pitch was that an upgrade to Windows 7 would be free when it came out. I still think that we, the Vista guinea pigs, should be getting 7 for free as well.
