On occasions I have been asked to provide translation for some ordinary English? well OK here's a little page that may help you Americans to learn real English

thanks GARP . i took a quick look @ the first couple of sections .some of us use accelerator instead of gas pedal also it's an engine that is in a vehicle not a motor .a window fan has a electric motor , people look a little funny @ me when i pronounce words like aluminum like it says there.or respite -{ree-spite}ex. respite for the soul .1 word that i wondered about was {cheeky} .when i was watching the movie the PATRIOT Mel Gibson described a British officer as a cheeky fellow 2 gen. Cornwallis. i c it means rude . obviously i am not a language major or anything but i do like 2 here how other people speak & on occasion use the different spelling & pronunciations 4 words .u would be surprised how it throws people off track 4 a bit LOL

I'm assuming that most of that list isn't really "Queen's English" as taught in schools, is it? It sounds like most of that is street slang. (at least I hope that's the case!)

I think the thing that really throws us off is that American slang is mostly euphemisms or shortened forms of words or phrases. And common use slang varies depending on what part of the country you're from, but you might be able to figure it out, or at least it makes some sense after someone explains it.

British have that weird rhyming slang that appears to be intentionally trying to be hard to understand. That, plus the funny accent, means we don't have the slightest idea what you're mumbling about!

as far as accents go it is all a matter of point of view,someone from the Bronx like Fran Dresher {nanny & the professor} or someone from the south would say we have an accent not them .lol ask Big Daddy lol.being able 2 relate & understand better the terms would help with movies & things i do believe most if not all of Europe pronounces it ahl-yoo-minny-um . there r linguists that r afraid of the way kids r learning 2 use slang on the puter. that the English language is in jeopardy,& some schools think words should b spelled phonically

Hmmmm, Bat, after reading your posting, I can't imagine why anyone would worry about the English language going bye-bye due to computer usage!!!

well the "queens English" is not used here really, only snobs use it and they are few.
The English used in the pages I gave is what we use everyday, well the maj of us anyway.
Cockney is what I use as it is what I was brung up on and i's not wanna loose it just as ya won't wanna loose your dialect from where ya comes from.
I don't often use heavy slang as ya geezers can't adam it, and ya may go do lally trying to sus it out, but I will use it when I wanna slag off someone and not let em know it :-)


On the subject of dialects we in the UK have some real dozzers, we down south er can't understand the cackle from the north sometimes (sorry Monk, pop) as fa Scots bloomin foreign, welsh is spoke in Gaelic most of the time and I know a little, as for Irish Gaelic thats hard to learn.

A simple little welsh phrase, lets see who can translate it :-)

"Dydd Llun, Dau ddeg Un, Mis Awst. an i Mae'n bwrw glaw."


If ya wanna know what cockney is like see if ya can view a soap called "east enders" as for north view if ya can "coronation street" for mid try "emmerdale farm"

I've heard of east enders but have never seen it. watched -are you being served- a few times but not recently

last nite whilst i was playing in saturday night with red & some others. red asked me what my country of origin was . i said the U.S.{american made lol} i pondered about that abit then thought that when i said i saw the OUTLAWS in a medium sized PUB & there were some good looking BIRDS there . red must have thought i was from Britain. c how it works lol .i just like 2 do things a little different sometimes . like i try not 2 use 2 many cliches . i am part english though
