As to the SSI (there is a difference.. ssi social security insurance vs. SSD social security disability) In the case of my step kids.. survivor benefits. Why shouldn't the kids be eligible for their fathers benefits? He paid into the government in his working years before the addiction. If it had not been claimed then the govt. absorbs the free money. It is all the inheritance they were going to get from him as he had nothing in the end. My gripe was not cause I thought the kids should have gotten more money, but that they pay out to him for an addiction that he inflicted upon himself.
Also he never paid a dime of child support, I am supporting his kids, not that it is a problem. I pay child support every paycheck to my ex for the raising of my son. So in this case I feel it is fair compensation that they got something from him, even if it was in a round about way.
Maybe I am missing the point, but if he is deceased and they have a home and are supported, I see no reason for the govt. to pay out anything to them. The cases in which things work out for the betterment of the kids should be reward enough. Then the excess funds (which I doubt is the case in most cases) could be redirected to some other purpose. The KEY in my thinking would be to eliminate (OK, reduce) the fraud in the system.
I do not agree with people doing what that lady in your example is doing. That is fraud and just plain wrong and lazy. I hope they bust her for it. If it bothers you, you could contact SS office and tip them off to it. Take some pictures if you can of her doing things that she says she cant, and give them to SS. She would be busted and have to pay back what she has stolen. Just an idea though. [/quote][/i]
Actually I have done this. I sent in a photo of her BUNGEE JUMPING of all things at a local attraction here in Pigeon Forge a few years after the SSD benefits started rolling in. I of course sent it anonymously but she still gets a check. What better proof could I have provided? The problem is that no one cares. Once they start getting checks I imagine it is very hard to take them away.
