I need an audio mixer. I haven't found one that meets my specs, but maybe one of you fine people is an expert!
SPECS
{ 3+ stereo channels (all powered sources, no phono or mic) with 2 sets assignable outputs. I want A and B outputs and be able to control what channels go to what outputs. I.E. Aout = ch1+ch2, Bout = ch3 }
OR
{ 2+ quadraphonic channels }
Preamp output, can't be a passive system.
EQ would be nice but not necessary.
Fairly small.
CHEAP!
Does such a thing exist, or am I smoking crack and need to just build it myself?

I sure wish I could help you out Lamron.

I'm no expert here, Lam , but I have a Fostex analog audio mixer/recorder that I have made great homemade recordings on..(Fostex XR5)..this unit is about 12 years old, but, similar-more up to date versions are still produced by Fostex... you can layer tracks just like the big boys! Go here and review their entry level analog/digital offerings. www.fostexusa.com/index.php?file=homethey have on-board level & EQ controls & you can output as you have spec'd out...Search Ebay for used ones! Hope this helps, The Pvt.

Thanks for the suggestions. Maybe I should have put the specification of "CHEAP" at the top of the list instead of the bottom! LOL
It looks like anything that does what I want is going to be way too expensive. So I just bought a Gemini PMX60 mixer off E-Bay for $2.50. I'm going to pull it apart and salvage the preamp and other components and build my own. If you want it done right (or to fit your own unusual needs), you have to do it yourself!
Everybody knows that the server only lags because I'm uploading homemade porn, so you probably think I'm wanting this to increase the production quality of my videos. Actually I'm trying to connect two computers (one quad and one stereo) to my current quadraphonic setup. I need to boost all of the channels and be able to combine/balance them.

Audio mixer to look for are the Alesis and Behringer models
these are what i use
VMX1000
mong professional DJs, certain mixers emerge over time as must-have equipment, and the PRO MIXER VMX1000 is destined to face such fate. It's a professional 7-channel rack-mount DJ mixer with a BPM counter that is predestined for professional clubbing with its wide-ranging connectivity options and intuitive layout.
Alesis Mixer 8 USB
• USB interface for recording the output directly to a PC • 8-channel professional mixer with 100 built-in digital effects • 3-band EQ per channel • 8 segment LED level meters
The MultiMix line combines studio-quality components and effects processing with rock-solid construction for the ultimate in compact mixers. MultiMix FX mixers are The Alesis MultiMix 8 USB is a compact 8-channel mixer featuring low-noise analog electronics and 100 great sounding 28-bit digital effects. With TRS balanced inputs, RCA connections, and XLR mic inputs with high gain, the MultiMix 8 USB is flexible enough for many applications. Add the two together and there's nothing that you can't do.
Hope that was helpful for you

The cost would be £250 altogether in the uk .This allows you to have a wide choice of may inputs.
Not sure how it works in $'s.
When u talk about passive system, this you only need to decide on what types of speakers.
To make this easy there are two types of speakers eg :
A passive speaker needs power from another source (i.e. a power amplifier). An active or powered speaker has an amplifier built in; therefore it needs a signal cable and a power cable run to it.
The advantage of an active speaker is that there is a very short run of speaker cable as the amplifier is right next to the speaker components. Long runs of speaker cable can result in both power and signal loss. The other advantage is that the manufacturer can precisely match the amplifier to the speaker.
The system which i have is a passive
On the system which i have built i use one amp to run the bass and the other to run my tops, Using the VMX1000 mean's you can take the bass signal out of the tops and send it to your bass bins without having to use a crossover.
Which is a real money saver.
Any speaker with a 300 - 500 rms will do justice useful for Studio, Bands , Disco's ect.
It all depends on your requirements.
