I had a power outage and then surge here tonight, and the server computer won't power up anymore. The server stuff is backed up on a different computer, and the drives are probably fine anyway, so data is really lost.
I'm not sure if I want to tear it apart and start replacing parts to try to fix it. I'm going to see if my insurance will replace it, but there's a $500 deductable to get past.
Has anyone done an insurance replacement on a computer that is several years old? Do they replace with the dollar equivilent of what I originally paid, or try to match the specs to a current computer? I paid about $1000 for it originally, which would obviously buy a much better computer today. Trying to match its older specs today would be difficult to find, and probably cost much less than my deductable.

Wow, that sucks.
I have never really had any claims on anything other than auto. Sorry I can't help you out there.

Im not sure either Lam.. Sorry too hear about your pc getting fried.
I would ask though if the power surge protector you had it plugged into came with a warranty. Some of them have one. If they fail too protect your equipment they will replace up to X number of $$'s.
Just an Idea.

It is plugged into a surge protector, and nothing else in the house was damaged. Maybe it wasn't really a surge, but the flickering of the power as it came back on that did it in. I'm getting nothing from it. No fans, lights, beeps, etc. Maybe its just the power supply.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. If it is just the power supply I would hope it didn't fry anything else down the line. I had a powersupply almost go up in flames (reason to NEVER use a PSU that comes with a case). Try to smell around the PSU area for a "burned electrical" smell.

Lam what size psu did it have in it or what do you need.. I have a few spares sitting around that you would be welcome too. I think i have a 300 and a 400 .
Let me know if you need/ want it.
They are used but then again they would be free.

Its not the power supply. I hot-wired the supply connector to trigger the power to come on. I get fans and drives spinning, but it won't boot up. I think this computer is dead! Should I use this as an excuse to build a media server computer?

Hey Lam,
I had a similar problem with a power surge/lightning strike here in the boonies a few years back.... I have State Farm Homeowners Insurance and I had surge protectors.
The strike took out my satellite receiver, my Internal Apple dial up modem, my almost new Denon home theater amplifier, an external dial up modem, and an old cordless telephone. State Farm told me to gather up all the receipts I could find .... They sent me a check in a week!
Turns out that the surge protectors at the time did not have RJ11 telephone jack protection. The post mortem was that the main power was protected...but, the jolt coming down via the RJ11 jacks "back doored" thru the satellite receiver to the Denon amp and carried on to the modems and cordless...!
The tech at Denon said that that was the Achilles Heel.
Hope you get a big check!
The Pvt.

No check coming. A computer with equivilent specs would cost less than $500, my deductable. I'm on my own for this one.
