Bleeding
If your health falls below 30% you will start bleeding. Picking up a health pack will heal you enough to stop the bleeding. If you bleed out, kill credit will go to the last person to injure you.
Bleeding is disabled when there are less than three players on the server. With only two players, its too easy to just hide while your victim bleeds out.
Spawn Protection
When you spawn, you will have 3 seconds of invulnerability to give you a chance to get your bearings. At the bottom of the screen a count-down shows you the time left. You can move, but any attack key will cancel your protection. If you shoot at a player and see a blue shield in your crosshairs, that player has spawn protection. Leave them alone.
NOTE: if you are using the Spawn Beacon perk, you DO NOT have spawn protection. You are vulnerable to whatever is waiting for you when you spawn. Booby trapping a Spawn Beacon with a claymore is a legitimate attack.
Skin Selector
While in Spawn Protection, there is a prompt to press your USE key to select a new skin. Your view will switch to third-person so you can see yourself. Choose your skin and press FIRE to end. While selecting the skin your Spawn Protection countdown is paused and you are invisible to other players. If you have selected a skin, you will have it every time you spawn, until you change it. If you never use the Skin Selector, you will receive the default for the map. Skin selections do not persist through map changes.
Range Finder
Some weapons have limited range. The range of each weapon is shown in the Loadout Menu. The damage listed there is what is received at the specified range. After that, the damage decreases down to 1 over the next 50% of the range.
For example: the M4 Carbine has a damage of 40, and a range of 100 yards.
100 yard or less: 40 damage
125 yards: 20 damage
150 yards or more: 1 damage
You aren't expected to remember any of that. Any time you are using iron sights or scope, your distance to target is shown on screen.
Distance number WHITE: full damage
Distance number Orange: reduced damage
Distance number RED: 1 damage, save your ammo.
For comparison, the stock game settings started reducing damage much closer, but never reduced to less than 50% of full damage. You could basically ignore the distance and keep shooting until you did enough damage. This new set up makes the distance much more of deciding factor in using different weapons.
Before you even mention it, I am fully aware that these ranges are all ridiculously short compared to real-world weapons. This is just a game element added to make the weapon attributes different. None of the COD4 maps are larger than real-world pistol range. The field-of-view settings give the illusion of larger spaces, but the actual map dimensions (in game units converted to feet) are much smaller than they appear.
