I would personally buy a Seagate hard drive and a Vantec Nexstar enclosure and manually back it up. You wouldn't have the software to do a "ONE Button" back-up but what you would get is a hard drive with a manufacturers 5 yr warranty.

That is what I was talked into at Best Buy. The external Seagate 320gb. They told me that the bearing system inside of this drive was better and quieter than most other comparables.
Lots of room to back up everything and since I don't collect music, this suits me just fine.

The nice thing about a mirrored external hard drive is that you could mount it into your computer and boot from it if you had to. I don't think any BIOS supports booting from a USB drive.

My new PC has two 500GB SATA drives & the MB supports RAID natively. I have leterally thousands of photographs I have taken that cannot be replaced so I wanted to make sure I have a mirror backup drive.

.... I don't think any BIOS supports booting ...... Just like the "registry," this "BIOS" is another Windows thing I don't fathom. Is there some quick tutorial y'all know of that explains the quick and dirty of Windows, I mean, other than buying "Windows for Dummies"?

Every computer has a BIOS (Basic In Out System, MACs might call it something different). Its a EPROM built into the motherboard and starts when the power is turned on. Its the program/chip that checks to see if there are memory and disk drives connected to the motherboard, and directs the disk to spin up and look for an operating system to load. Without it, you just have an expensive paperweight.
The BIOS does have a very basic text interface where you can tell it what order to search connected storage devices when looking for an operating system. Since USB storage requires drivers that don't load until after the OS is up, you can't boot from those (there may be some exception to this that I am unaware of).

OK, that sounded vaguely familiar. The Mac OS help file gave this for PROM:
I know this is how MacUsers restart with an external bootable disk or a bootable disk that is different than the one we have previously set as our startup disk, so it's how we do a rescue restart if our main hard disk dies. To start up from a bootable CD or DVD, we hold C down and hit the power button.
I'm glad to learn what some of the Mac equivalents are for Windows, to better help me with my work PC, plus I hope soon to try MOHA via Windows on my daughter's MacIntel.

It is so hard for me to keep up with so many things at once. I really do wish that I knew more about computers and was able to do those things that you guys are talking about. I just do what I can to keep my head above water regarding computers. That is really cool that you are all so eager to offer your experience and expertise with computers. Some day I will need to corner one of you guys to help me set up my computer for better performance and such. Maybe this Winter?

If you have questions Im always happy to help the best I can.. If I don't know the answer I will help you search out the solution.
