The server will be down for a little while tonight for a hardware upgrade.

GRRRRR.... stupid hardware. I shouldn't be up at 5am screaming at a RAID controller.

Don't sweat it Lamron, take a break and don't put so much pressure on yourself.
Of course this is easy for me to say, but it still needs to be said.
I get the same way when battling against my computers or other inanimate objects/projects. I just can't stop working on something until I emerge victorious!

same here... no chunk of inanimate crap is going to defeat me LAM: you have mentioned needing a new server... what kind of coin are we talking about to make that happen?

and what specs are you looking at?
I bet there are more than a few of us here that would donate to make it happen.

The server computer is fine, I'm just trying to set up dual disk mirroring so that in the event of another drive failure it will keep running with no interruption. The RAID (Redundant Array Independent Disks) controller would not allow me into the menus to set up the mirroring.
This should have been a simple 30 min. job that ended up taking all night until I finally gave up on it.

myself I would send that sucker back and get a different brand.. I hate non user friendly hardware. The nerds at some of these companies think we all have a masters degree in engineering.

I ended up ripping the hardware RAID out and going with a software solution instead. Now the server computer has a synchronized mirror drive. So now if a hard drive bursts into flames, all I have to do is unplug the drive and reboot. The second drive automatically takes over with no loss of OS or data.
After the last drive died unexpectedly, I've gotten a little paranoid about backups. Fortunately it was on the server computer that doesn't have anything else on it, but if it had been my main computer I would have been totally screwed. I've got literally THOUSANDS of lines of script that I wrote myself, so they are irreplaceable. Now I'm running dual mirrored drives on both of my computers, and when I get a new computer I'm going to make sure the motherboard supports RAID natively. Extra hard drives have really come down in price, and a complete system loss would be devastating. So I recommend that everyone takes a good look at their backup system and see if they need to improve it.

I have also been giving this alot of thought lately.( back up systems).. after I save up for it I'm going to go with a external back up drive.. Looking for about 500gig (1/2 terabyte) that will be way over kill for my back up needs but for the money is about the best value. Then after installed I can set my programing to auto backup the hard drive every so often and manually as needed.

I have 4 M/B's that all support SATA RAID/IDE...my current setup has 2 SATA 1 IDE...Dual DVD-RW's and a 200 g Maxtor in a Vantec enclosure. I use the enclosure and other drives as back up..never really ran the RAID due to the fact that I have only had 2 HD failures in 13 yrs..but with the amount of backup I do have, reformatting is fairly quick..then i install the extras as I need them later on. Plus I am out of physical room to install anything more in my tower...that is why I am looking at a new one..the drives mount sideways so it opens all kinds of space...same size tower as I have..just a better configuration.

I just bought a usb 2.0 maxtor 500 Gb external disk, mainly to back up my music files. Cost about $120, if I recall correctly, from Best Buy or Staples.
