go for the..... real wide rear tyre..the wife just needs guidance thats all! LOL.. Ohhh, don't know about the fatter rear tire, if you're planning to ride with her on with you! It might give her the idea that a little extra......support...... is needed for the bike to carry, er, uh, extra accessories, of course, and that might not go over well, somehow!

Riding season...it is almost here for us! Yeah baby! I am hoping to go south of the border with a few buddies and do the Oregon coast this year. I drove it in a car a few years back and have always had the itch to ride it.

I have been riding mine since January, I love the southern winters. Be cautious of the wide tire They can complicate things at low speeds. I say buy the best you can within your budget. I ride a Yamaha and constantly get compliments even from the guys in the HOG chapter I ride with.

I ride a Harley at work but I probably wouldn't buy one. I don't find them to be as reliable mechanically as others and obviously you pay more for them due to the name. The upside to them is that they hold their value better than other bikes. Our newer Harley's have the front and back anti-lock braking system which I am told will only be released to the general public this year. I haven't looked into that fact though. I can tell you that is was a huge thrill testing out the front anti-lock's! I kept waiting to go flying over the bars. The downside to the AL brakes was the "brains" of the system is kept in one of the saddlebags taking up valuable space.

I dont know about bikes but I HATE AL brakes on cars and trucks.. on wet pavement or dry they are ok.. on ice and snow they suck.

Why do they suck on ice and snow? All the ABS circuit does is pump the brakes far faster than the human driver can do. This keeps them from locking up far better than we can do ourselves. Of course in snow and ice I doubt anything would be 100% as variables such as angle, speed, and even windspeed would affect the performance.

All this talk of riding makes me want to go! There's been a couple of days recently where its been warm enough, but the roads are still covered in ice.
How does the Harley's ABS work? I didn't know you could do that on non-powered brakes.

By "warm" you mean 32 degrees? That's the highest I've seen in the last month!

Around here it gets up to almost 50 degrees between snowstorms.
This was our January:
Day MAX MIN 1 30 10 2 14 3 3 26 4 4 41 20 5 46 36 6 63 46 7 68 61 8 62 42 9 44 35 10 53 35 11 45 33 12 44 27 13 37 28 14 29 20 15 28 14 16 36 19 17 35 24 18 32 18 19 29 5 20 17 0 21 33 8 22 36 10 23 29 9 24 26 3 25 24 1 26 32 23 27 45 17 28 50 26 29 54 13 30 22 9 31 30 17
A 30+ degree span from HI to LO from day to day isn't unusual. So sometimes we'll see beautiful 50+ days with snow on the ground.

The Honda gold wings have had ABS for years. Alot of riders hate them at first but then get used to it and love them. Searching the how it works thing on the net has not provided much yet. BMW has had it sence the early 80's.

when the abs kicks in on the ice.. yes it pumps the brakes for you very fast. This does not help. In my experience this makes it harder to control the vehicle. I prefer slow light pressure pumps on the brake on ice when I have to stop. The ABS gives full harsh very rapid on offs to your brakes, which cause the same effect as stomping on the brakes on ice.
As I said they work well on dry or wet pavement though.
