I've been a Republican all my life. Lately, however, I've come to be sickened by the 'our side or theirs' mentalities of both parties, and the viciousness with which both parties attack one another. Smear campaigns and propoganda do not serve to further your party, they just drag both parties to new lows.
Our Senators and Reps will trash a piece of good legislation simply to maintain party lines. This is ridiculous. In my opinion, the radical liberals tend to be more venomous and senseless than even radical conservatives. There also seem to be more radicals on the liberal side of things...or maybe they just spout off more often. Then again, maybe they just get the majority of the air time so it seems like there are more of them.
Our system of government is rapidly deviating from its intent at birth. Both sides have convoluted views of what the government's role should be. The Republicans used to be all about small government, but that seems to be an abandoned ideology lately.
I am a conservative. I am also still a Republican simply because that party is closest to my beliefs. The Democrats are WAAAAAAAYYYYY off base, in my opinion. Dangerously off base.

WOW! a conservative that can discuss the core issue (as I see it) without making personal attacks about the intelligence, etc. of the other side. Much appreciated Des

I would agree.. Both parties need to bury the hatchet.. stop holding grudges about who got elected and who didn't. get on with it and hammer out some good legislation that will benefit our country.
You put into words my feelings on the matter Des better than I could.. Wish I had your talent for words. thanks

Just a thought here but to me it seem that all the elected officials are after is bettering it for them. No matter what the cost. And they all lie and play games to win our vote. The recent debate of the Dems. and the Gay issues. what a circus show. They merely skirted the issues for the most part and feel that by recognizing they (the homos) exist they will on that alone win over a vast majority of them. Oh well enough about that now back to the game...LOL'

I have said for a long time now, kick em all out and lets try again. But that will never happen. another never happen, but might work. Get laws passed so they can not give themselves pay raises and benefit packages, make that a voter option at the polls. Then I bet they would start listening to the people about what bills to write and vote on. I know, I know... how dare I expect them to actually listen to the voters and earn their pay.. what was I thinking.

Off topic a bit, but since it is a current thread and politically relevant, I'll post here anyway.
For some reason, I decided to watch Bill Maher's stand-up 'comedy' show "The Decider". I know what some of you are thinking. But, I want to watch those on 'the other side' from time to time to more completely grasp the whole picture.
Wow. That dude is an ass. He hates Bush (duh). I have no problems with that. He is a liberal. All liberals hate a Republican president. He blasted Reagan. Whoa, dude. Serious f'ing foul, there. Reagan may have been a Republican, but he was also a great leader. The best I have seen in my lifetime. Besides, how about a little respect for the recently deceased?!?
He loathes religion. I don't understand this one. Either one is religious or one isn't. I don't automatically hate someone with beliefs different from my own, but Maher sure as hell does. Speaking of Hell, I have a pretty good idea where this ass-hat has a ticket to. Bon voyage, knucklehead. His degree of intolerance is difficult to understand. While I am not religious, I do notice how families that are seem closer and have strong family values. Difficult to fault that, but not for Maher. He does defend homosexuality, and maybe that is his cornerstone for his loathing for religion. While watching his somewhat effeminate expressions and movement, I began to wonder a bit about him. Now I'm not saying he sucks wanker, but I strongly believe he may have held one in his mouth a time or two. Whatever...to each his own (I guess).
He quite obviously wants the government to come to the aid of anyone in need, regardless of the poor decisions that led them to that need.
This was supposed to be a comedy show, but nothing was funny to me. Most was quite disturbing. What I saw was pure hate. Rush probably hates liberals, but he doesn't spit venom as obviously as Maher.
This guy is just bad for the public, because many will buy into his hate since HBO sees fit to air it so frequently. His talk show aired there is equally disgusting.
Very disturbing, indeed.
