I think i hear my hard drive spining, but making a funky noise also. So what should I do? Do I shell out the money to take it in to someone and have them look at it or buy a new one? Thanks for the input Lam. Rock, rock, rock... We aren't aloud out have names, ranks, and socials of works on our home computers... everything is done via Mil web. If only Tricare were that smart lol. What does a new hard drive cost for a laptop? how much to have it installed? anyone know?

I think i hear my hard drive spining, but making a funky noise also. So what should I do? ...... "......play that fun-ky mu-sic, lap-top, play that fun-ky mu-sic now-owww....." Sorry, couldn't resist. Seriously, I can't help. I can't even commiserate, as it's never happened to me. Maybe you should just bat your eyes at some local 'puter nerd and get him to volunteer to check under the hood!!! (There you guy, Des, a nice fat one right across the middle of the plate!). A local computer user's group might supply one or three of such personnage. Even if it's a Mac user group it might work, as many Mac users also use Windows boxes at work and do repairs and installations as side businesses (so they have the expertise), but you can usually get them to help out of sheer interest and fun with computers (or to do so cheap, if you plead poor, or apply other techniques.....did I mention the batting of eyes???). Just look in the yellow pages of your local phone book or google on computer user groups (and Mac user groups through apple.com). Good luck, Hall.

I'm starting to see your pattern, Desmo2! Taking out of context and "missunderstanding" everything Red says looks like fun! Can I play too? Absolutely! ;D I must admit, though, I hadn't realized RedRock was my only victim! I must try to spread the wealth! ...or not.

Ya, I think its a software problem now.. I had a computer junky come over and he ran the bios on it, and said all my hardware is working so I guess now is the question, if I go out and buy the windows xp cd will that reformat and load xp again? or do I have to do something else?

as long as it is set to boot to cd..you just have to follow the prompts to load XP. Here is a question though...how old is the laptop?..it should have come with either an operating system disc or a recovery disc. If it has a recovery disc drop it in and reboot the laptop. It should do the rest.

If you purchased the laptop new, you shouldn't have to buy Windows XP again. I recently reformated my Dell laptop. I just called Dell and asked them to send me a replacement disk. You should be able to get a disk for free or just the price of shipping. These disks won't have license numbers with them.
Look on the bottom of your laptop and find the Windows XP product sticker. That sticker has a long number on it that is your license. If you can get a disk sent to you, or just borrow one from somebody, you can use that number to install it.

I had all the recovery disks and so forth, but about 6 months ago, had a sound problem, took it into the shop, with the box, power adapter, recovery cds and everything. 2 weeks later went to pick it up, and all they brought out was my lap top, no cds, no box, no power adapter. I spent like 3 hours arguing with them, to get nothing acomplished. I had to order a new power adapter, but never came around to getting a new recovery cd. So all i have to do is call the company and give them that windows XP # and they will send me a new recovery cd? Thanks so much for the help Lam... It is frustraing.. I just enrolled in a computer class, so I dont feel like a dummy anymore when it comes to this stuff lol.

well I have my computer somewhat working, some how when I loaded the new xp os... it split my hard drive into two. I have a 20 gb, and a 60 gm now. But when you have the internet explorer up it runs really rough, when you drag it around the screen or are scolling down on it. What causes that? plus, it didn't load my sound drivers or anything. So right now, i have no sound... this thing is driving me insane... any help out there?

When you did the install, you had the option to replace the existing OS or install new. You must have picked the latter. So now you have two operating systems.
You probably what to fix that before bothering with anything else. The easiest solution might be to reformat the whole drive and wipe everything clean. Then reinstall.
After a fresh install, go to "Add/Remove Programs" and removing anything you don't actually need. Windows automatically installs a bunch of junk that slows everything down. Then you can install Service Pack 1 and 2, and all other updates. Don't plan on doing anything else that day!
