Just wondering if anyone else here has Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome or Non-24 Sleep/Wake Syndrome? I was diagnosed with both of them about a year ago. My family all thinks I'm stupid and lazy and/or lying about all the symptoms. It has caused a lifetime of problems and a lot of resentment between us (especially my parents). It would be nice to talk to someone else suffering from it, and to hear about any successful treatments. If you're curious what I'm talking about, these are pretty decent articles about what these conditions are: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_sleep_phase_syndromeen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-24-hour_sleep-wake_syndrome

I do not have either of those sleep dosorders, but in July of 2003 I was diagnosed with TWELVE sleep disorders. It turns out that sleep apnea was the most severe of my issues, and a CPAP machine resolved 10 of the 12 issues withing a few months. There are some in my family who think that sleep apnea is a joke and that it is not a real problem. But from the perspective of someone who can now function normally in life due to a simple machine used while sleeping, I know it is certainly real. The important issue is that you get the treatment required to resolve the problem, if possible. You work, so screw what they say. It is funny to me that so many issues with health are ignored or denied by parents of young adults. WTF is up with that?

That is sad to hear, I am sorry your family treats you so. I understand to a point. I have always been more of a "night" person sleeping better during the day than during "normal" sleep times. This is why I prefer 3rd shift jobs.
I would say that the majority here do not consider you lazy or stupid. Keep your chin up guy, and don't take no for an answer from the docs. Keep looking for a doc with the answers until you find one that can help you.

After reading the article about Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome I am almost positive that I suffer from it. I seem to ALWAYS be tired right around 3-4 no matter when I woke up that day. I normally sleep til about 12-1, but if I was to get up earlier I would still not feel tired until 4 and would have a very difficult time getting to sleep any earlier.
I asked my Doctor about this, but he must not have known the official diagnosis. He suggested a prescription called Trazadone to help get me to sleep. It was originally an anti-psychotic 15-20 years ago, but they lowered the dose a lot and now use it to help people feel sleepy. It is not a steroid and it is not addicting. All it does is help you fall alseep, it does not keep you asleep.
After taking that for a month or so, I could sleep a fairly normal schedule. You may want to ask your doctor about that, it worked great for me.

Slackers...LOL
I am a firm believer that some people are wired for nit time too. Even as a young guy I couldn't stay up past say 3:00am or so. When I first got out of the Army I was working in a whse. third shift...bout killed me. As for the sleep problems I cant comment on it as when I go to bed thats it lights out. My wife however has some issues and had a sleep study done. Kind of strange how they do it first is an all nighter where you sleep there, then is the day time one where they tell you when to go to sleep and time you to see how long it takes. There was a third test but I forgot what they did. Any way after all this she was found to be a narcoleptic, insomniac???
Isn't that an oxymoron?
I hope you can get it all sorted out.

Those sleep studies aren't any fun. They glue 50 wires to you, tell you there's a camera overhead watching your every movement in the dark, then say "go to sleep now!". Not exactly the most relaxing enviroment.

Not exactly the most relaxing enviroment. Boy you got that right. During my first one in June of 2003 I did not think I would ever get to sleep. Luckily I only have to have them every three years now.

I actually went for a sleep study and I have had like 5 things wrong, including the DSPS, sleep apnia, crap can't remember the others. The only thing I am going to change is I have to use that crazy machine, I can't eat 3 hours before I go to bed, and I have to keep taking my trazadone. I'm hoping that the machine works though, because people who have had it all say they have never gotten a good night sleep until they used the machine.

Wouldn't sleep apnea and Trazadone use disqualify you for the military?

It would if I chose to tell them about it. But they only know what I tell them, so I should be fine. I'm hoping by the time I go to basic my body will be set on a normal schedule and I won't have to use the machine and trazadone anymore.

I have already done a clean drug screen in july, and I won't have to take another one until just before basic. So I should be fine there. I have also talked to my recruiter and he said I will be fine as long as I stop taking it a few weeks before I leave for basic.

Make sure you get instructions from your doctor on HOW to taper off. Some meds, it's not good to quit suddenly.

Trazadone is a non addicting sleep med, which is the only reason I will take it. You can stop and start whenever you want with no side effects. It has been used for like 30 years, so it is very safe. But thanks for the heads up red. EDIT: Here is the wiki entry for it. I am using a much lower dose of the anti-psychotic version of this. I think I am using 10mg dose, when the anti psychotic is like 60mg or something like that. I don't remember for sure. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trazodone

the only sleep problem i have is snoring, sometimes it's so loud it even wakes me up. it was driving my wife crazy, so she would sleep on the couch. but i only seem to snore when i'm really tired and worn out. we went to a local home show and found this product called snore no more, it sure works, i haven't snored since using it, and it also helps you to fall asleep.
