I discovered Puddles on Postmodern Jukebox. He's a well-established artist/character who's been touring for a few years. I was a little surprised that Simon had never heard of him. He ended up losing on AGT. He ALWAYS stays in character, no matter what. That works in single videos, or when fans come to a concert specifically to see him. But on AGT, the winner is the one with the best "story" that can connect with the audience or gain their sympathy. Actual talent is secondary. For example, in 2016 Grace VanderWaal won and she was clearly the worst of the top ten.
