One of the reasons we know that the earth isn't "100s of millions of years old" like the evolutionists want to claim is the observation of entrophy. The earth's spin slows down. Work backward more than several thousand years and the earth would be spinning too fast to retain an atmosphere. There are other things like this that we can observe, and one of the best is the sun's shrinkage. You don't have to go back very far before the sun would be touching the earth's place in orbit! LOL I happed to come across a website that had the actual numbers and math for the sun's shrinkage and thought it might be interesting: www.icr.org/index.php?module=articles&action=view&ID=165

Well, that's interesting, but it still ignores some basic biblical truth and limits God's role in creation.
God is in charge, it was his creation, and he alone defined what the time period was during creation (a day is as a thousand years to the lord, and a thousand years as to a day, 2 Pet. 3:8--he's timeless, time means nothing to him), with "light" made the second "day," vegetation made the third "day," and the stars, sun, and moon not made until the fourth "day" !!! (Gen. Ch. 1). It is only man's assumption that God's "day" is a 24-hr. period based on the earth's revolution around the sun (which wasn't even made until the fourth "day" !!!). Instead, each of those "days" of creation could be nano-seconds, or hundreds of millions of years, etc., and each "day" doesn't have to be the same length of time, either. Nor is it necessary, therefore, that any given creature, whether plant or animal, had to have been made by God fully finished and adult, etc.
(Compare: John built a house. He didn't snap his fingers and it was all there suddenly, he first planned, then gathered materials and tools, then measured, then dug a foundation, then laid the foundation, then put up a frame, then added a roof and walls, etc., etc., etc., until he was finished. While God could snap his fingers and make plants, animals, man, everything completely whole and finished, there is no reason it had to be that way, in fact, that he did do it in steps and took 6 "days" to do it tells me there probably were steps along the way, steady or quantum, for all the secondary and in-between events during each day!).
So, yes, it is possible, without invoking the theory of evolution, for the earth to be hundreds of millions or even billions of years old but the sun be much younger.
Or, if God chose to create the earth within the "atmosphere" of the (presumably larger then) sun but protect it from the cosmos or sun (or even suspend the sun's energy and activity) while he builds the earth and then separates the heavens and the earth and the waters and the ground and the darkness and the light, all according to his timetable and his desires until he has the finished product and turns it all loose to run according to his established laws of physics (Thus the heavens and the earth were finished...and on the seventh day God ended his work...and he rested on the seventh day from all his work...Gen. 2:1-2), then the sun could be as old basically as the earth--who are we to say it couldn't have happened that way or didn't happen that way? With God all things are possible.
The theory of evolution is a useful work-frame with which to study nature and science, but it is wrong because it denies the existence of God and his role in everything. Instead, God could have done all his creation exactly as he's told us in the scriptures, but also entirely along the lines of the evolution theory, stepwise according to his plans over hundreds of millions of years, until he was ready to put a soul into the beast of the earth (create man in his own image) and then finally end all of his creation efforts.
So, we don't "know" that the earth isn't hundreds of millions of years old. And entropy and the other laws of physics were fully implemented by God only after God was finished with his creation, which again could have been hundreds of millions of years after he began.
We are fortunate that our spiritual salvation does not depend upon how or when God created the earth, sun, or man, but instead upon our obedience to his word and his only begotten son, who btw was with him in the beginning and helped with all the creation! John 1:1-3
