Interesting video about "Astro-Turfing", individuals manipulating systems to appear to be large groups of people.

Thanks for sharing. It was interesting, and frightening. But I didn't hear the term "asto-turfing" used, and it didn't say anything about a goal or effect of appearing to be large groups of people, that I heard. Unless it was somehow implying that all the slightly different versions of the uploaded videos get their view and like/dislike counts added into each other. Was there another video you were thinking of, instead of this one?

"Astro-turfing" wasn't used in the video. It just means a fake grass-roots movement, slang for regular people naturally coming together for a common purpose.
When someone creates a video or social media post and pays for or otherwise fakes a large number of views, likes, reposts, etc. its designed to give the impression that thousands of people are involved and all agree it, so when real people see it they think it must be real and maybe they should believe it too.
Search engines refine their results by pushing popular things, or things that are linked to by many other sites, to the top of the list. Faking large groups of people can influence real people who stupidly follow the crowd.

The video talks about all the things that Twitter does to protect against manipulation, and that's interesting. BUT, the big elephant that was ignored was Twitter's own manipulation. Internally, the company is just as guilty as any external threat they're trying to stop. They're not morally opposed to fake news, they just want to be the ones in control of it.
