This thread is for announcements of new features (or fixed old features) on the Homepage.
Please keep comments relevant to the usage or bug reports of these features. Suggestions for new features can go in another thread.
I'm working my way through reworking the Homepage. Some features were no longer working because I made the new site secure (HTTPS). Doing this means that I can't take an element hosted someplace else and show it on the page, because mixing secure and insecure elements is not allowed. So everything visible on the Homepage has to actually be on Lamronverse.com. Most of the pre-made website gadgets are designed to appear on the page as an "iframe", basically a little window that is actually showing something from another site. This allows people to use it, but not see the source code. So if I want similar functionality, I have to write it all myself, using a mixture of HTML, PHP, and Javascript. I'm not an expert in any of those, so it takes me a long time to write entirely new code.
However, there are some advantages when I do write new code.
- No dependencies on data from other sites I can't control. If LamronVerse.com is visible, then everything is available and working.
- No visitor tracking from other servers.
- I control all of the features, it works exactly the way I want it to!
NEW FEATURE: Image File Hosting
Image files can now be uploaded and stored on the LamronVerse.com hosted space. They can be securely linked to and viewed from anywhere. Uploaded images are renamed with a unique six letter filename, so you don't have to worry about duplicates or ridiculously long links.
When you upload a file you'll see a screen with premade text for Direct link, BBCode (universal for most forums), or HTML. There's also options for showing the image as a clickable thumbnail, or fullsize. Click the "Copy" button next to the option you want and it will be copied to your clipboard, ready to paste wherever you need it.
In order to somewhat manage the eventual size of this storage space, I made a duplicate checker. If you upload a picture that is already uploaded, you will be given the link to the existing picture, instead of a new entry being saved. The matching test does not rely on filenames, so it should be very good at detecting and preventing duplicates.
There is an additional feature I built into this that I don't think I've ever seen before. All hosted pictures are viewable. The link "Public Images" will take you to a page with every file ever uploaded, so you can go back later and find images you have uploaded in the past. The library page shows thumbnails, click the image to view full size, or select "Get Link" to see all of the same options for link types that where shown when it was originally uploaded. Images are displayed in reverse order of their upload time. The newest image is at the top.
(If you need PRIVATE image hosting, that will be available when STORAGE is up and running.)
Keep in mind that other people can see these pictures. For the most part, I don't care what you use this for, but if I see nudity or obviously commercial content (someone trying to use our bandwidth to host images visible on their site) I will delete it. Uploads are anonymous . No one, including me, can tell who uploaded a picture.
If you want a picture you uploaded to be removed, or want to report something you think shouldn't be allowed to be publicly visible, send an E-Mail to Admin@LamronVerse.com. (Include the file name!)
Disclaimer: I will maintain this storage space to the best of my ability, but I am not responsible for any loss or injury that you experience due to images being lost, deleted, or temporarily unavailable. This includes both events outside of my control (problems with hosting company) or events under my control (some error on my part). This feature is for your convenience in sharing pictures on the internet. If it is important to you, then make sure to save a backup someplace else.
