Red,
My fireplace is 2" fieldstone. It was built in 1977. The funny thing is that this rock now sells for $250 per ton and UP. For reference, it takes about a ton to do a small fireplace roof top chimney. We remodeled our home this past spring and had the chimney removed as we use gas logs now. The guy who removed it did the chimney removal labor for free and PAID US $250 to haul off the stone as he wanted it for his own home.

they are doing a similar things here and all over the country. only it is for coal methane gas. they buy the mineral rights for $100 at auction then drill whether you like it or not . and you cant stop them and get no royalties.so a word of advice ..check to make you own the mineral rights if you own or even if you rent. here is the story www.thepittsburghchannel.com/news/10276156/detail.html it tells you how to check to see if you own or can buy the mineral rights. below the video .

I agree that there is nothing like a wood burning fire place. But with the remodel we wanted to eliminate the hassle and mess of a wood fireplace. I do miss it a little, but the gas fireplace is so much more convenient.
As to the story Red posted that started this thread, I have serious doubts that the mineral rights will prevail to the previous owner. In TN when you sell a home on land it is sold fee simple. In other words, to have and to hold forever. I have heard of instances where mineral rights later became an issue, but the seller in those cases did NOT prevail. The rights, both above and below surface lever were part of the transfer. I suspect this will be the result in this case as well.

according to the story in the video the mineral rights are being bought 4 for the back taxes just like u can do at a sheriff's sale for the regular property. apparently they are separate.at least here they are. so never assume anything.you know what happens when you do that.better to check into it and be safe not sorry. cause you know what companies or the govt. are like when there is a buck too be had.no matter what their slogans say they are not your friend
