Speaking of "ear-fuls", I just sent an email to Gateway... and not in a nice way either. Glitch after glitch, some regarding Gateway, most regarding Vista. System restore points, can a person burn those out after using them so much? ha ha I am almost convinced that the Napster program that came with this computer, is a terrible virus. I tried to uninstall it and Vista came back with the response, "Uninstaller program stopped unexpectedly" or something like that. So I try to load up the program in order to change the settings in it to keep it from starting up when windows starts up. Then it told me that it was missing a file and could not load. It gave me the link to go and re-install it, (I am thinking at this point that this may be why I can't uninstall it). After clicking on the link, Windows Explorer encounters a problem and needs to shut down. Stop upgrading, If it aint broke, don't fix it! Doh! (sigh)

From the New York City server: Download Speed: 3130 kbps (391.3 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 335 kbps (41.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Will have to try again and update the speeds later...my connection is being used quite heavily right now, with the wife using VPN.

up date.... Got in touch with my isp.. proved my speed was lower than what I'm paying for after jumping through their hoops and showing them it was not my comp slowing the speed down. Now tech support is chewing on the problem and supposed to get it fixed in 24 hours or less. We shall see how proficient their nerds are. lol They had me use www.pcpitstop.com testing and their results came in even lower than the basic service speeds.

I tried again today ant the results were similar. However I also tried my isp's test site and got the following
Download Speed: 6103 kbps (762.9 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 363 kbps (45.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
not at all that far from the other site. I guess this is OK for a cable connection?

I hope they come to some resolve on your problem Shadow. I was thinking...(I know) if your on DSL are you restricted by your internal(home) phone wire capabilities? Think back to good old fashioned dial up, only as fast as the slowest part. if you are using your phone wire to transmit information could it be the culprit that is robbing you of some speed?

good idea IDA... I did ask them that question, and they said that the short amount of phone wire between the box on my house and the dsl modem would not make it drop that much.

sorry to hear of your troubles silly... ( I feel another mac advertizement coming) Red knows better. He knows that I know, that he knows, that I know that I should be buying a computer that actually doesn't require me to do anything and in fact would rather that I did just that, nothing to screw it up. He also knows, that I know, that he knows, that I know that he knows, that there are many of us out there that perpetually need to learn things the hard way, or just simply, may never learn. ;D LMAO... don't ever use the "spell-checker" after you use a quote from DS. I enjoy giving you crap DS, cause I know that you enjoy giving it right back.

LOL on the boat anchor! We, my Dad and I had a funny experience last year while fishing. I happened to look back where I threw in the anchor and found that the rope that the anchor was tied to, was floating on top of the water. So, we do need a new one. ;D You know what? you are right DS. Life is too short to worry about the little things, like spelling and such. I kin reed wat yoo tipe purdy eesilee. ...and you kin blame my Maw fer gettin too picky with spellin'. She was and still is a perfectionist so we, us kids weren't allowed to make many mistakes without her harping on us all the time. Yes, I have become my Parents.

Update again...
after another half hour on the phone running more tests on my comp (that is not the problem) the techie on the other end about dropped his pocket protector when his test came back that I'm only running 9.73% of the average speed for our ISP.. He told me my problem was above his pay scale and he would bump it up the line for resolution. so I get to sit and wait on them again while they scratch their collective heads.. If you could not tell I'm beginning to loose patience with them fast.
