The ability to use the new iPhone on networks other than ATT is complicated; but, is in the near future!
First, the contract that ATT has with Apple has some exclusivity in it..... Keep in mind Apple shares the revenue of the SERVICE portion of the ATT bill. 24% if memory serves me correctly.
Secondly, (and technically), the competing carriers have alluded to, (but have not as yet), accepting devices that they do not market. ALL US & UK network carriers subsidize sales of cell phones through "packages" & "contract periods". They are beginning to realize that customers needs are diverse and their feeble, limited hardware & service offerings are a gating factor.
There is no reason that Verizon for example could not support an iPhone. THey have to make a conscious effort to do that. APPLICATIONS that network providers offer should be their focus; not "cell phone of the month" as they do now. The reason the iPhone is so sought after is that it delivers APPLICATIONS; some of which are already winners; like iPhoto, iTunes (with video/movie capabilty) etc. I recently took my iTouch on a 5 day trip. Guess what? I did not need to take a laptop! It did all my emailing, web surfing, music, and just for good measure downloaded 3 one hour episodes of "The Tudors" from Showtime. Plugged the iTouch into the hotel TV and watched them. All from a lowly 8 gig unit. The compelling part of the iPhone announcement was the "MobileMe" application suite. This is aimed directly at the RIM-Blackberry business market, but also maintains all the best of the Apple media suites. This includes "push" email like a Blackberry. So, it's not all just about the hardware. It's gotta be all inclusive. Things to watch: The carriers are going to be changing their behaviors very soon. People want application delivery; not just limited to "$99 phone of the month". Handheld devices will eventually eliminate a great portion of the laptop market. Battery technology is making breakthroughs as we speak (for cars too). Intel's ATOM processor delivers most Applications in handhelds at low power. 3G/4G cellular networks will compete with WiMax buildouts. It's gonna be fun to watch!

My first thought when I saw the list of applications and the device capibilities was that they are not just going after the phone/PDA/mp3/camera market. For many people this is actually becoming a credible alternative to a laptop.

I will continue to wait until it is not proprietary to the AT&T network. As I have stated we have very poor At&t coverage in my area. I have eyeballed the Itouch but balked at the price.

I too look forward to the day when I can travel without my laptop and not feel like I am missing out on normal activities. I also will NOT use AT&T for my phone service as their service sucks in my area.
