my lcd monitor is as about 3.5 feet from me on the computer desk, my eyes are not good either my left eye is near sited and my right eye is far sited, i need glasses for reading now but still haven't bought any. they'll have to be prescription. and they are expensive. my dad got lazer vision done a few years ago. the lazer specialist botched it and now he is partially blind and will be fully blind in a few years, so i'm reluctant to get lazer done.

so i'm reluctant to get lazer done. If you can find a competent Eye Doctor ,I would go for it ! I had cataracts removed from both eyes ,then had laser surgery 3 times, Once on the right , Twice on the left . Still need glasses for up close ,But can see like I did when I was a young kid far away ! Before I had a hard time passing the vision test at all at the DMV. Now I can breeze through it , no problem.

I used to have excellent vision in both eyes, but now, after seeing Gen Savahoe's photo in the Happy Birthday thread, I am partially blind in my right eye, while the left eye is oozing mysterious fluids.

LMAO Sillly... me too.. I tried to shut my eyes as fast as I could, but now believe I may have retinal damage.
I would still love to have the eye surgery.. It is a very unpleasant thing to make sure that you have a spare set of contacts or glasses with you at all times. If I did not, and something happened I would not be able to function at all.. I can not even see to find my glasses in the morning I have to know were I put them then night before to be able to find them.

I'm not as cool as AIGAD with his DUAL 28"s (show-off !! ;D), but here's mine: For a size comparison, the browser window open on the screen is 1024x768 and is the same size as a 15" monitor. With LCD's you have to turn the brightness WAY down. The flash washes it out in this picture, but I have light bars mounted to the wall behind the monitor. I find that the backlighting on the wall helps with eye-strain, and once you get used to the bigger monitor you can't imagine going back to the small screens that lesser mortals still use.

nice set up you have there Lam... I would take a pic of mine. But my "cave" of an office is a mess. I'm enjoying my new 19" wide screen LCD, not the 28 inchers you and aigad have, but is much nicer than the 17" CRT I was using.. I'm now using that one for a secondary monitor in dual set up.
It took me about 3 days to get used to the new monitor.. Made my head feel "fuzzy" looking at it.

I wavered between one big monitor or two smaller for quite a while. I'm still thinking about adding a second, smaller monitor. Once you get used to the extra real estate of dual/big monitors, you can't go back!
You're the first I've heard of mixing a CRT and LCD. How hard on the eyes is it to look back and forth between them?

It does not bother me.. I would like to get a second LCD even if it was a smaller one, for my secondary monitor. The set up is not cosmetically appealing but functional.
If I am not mistaken Big D also uses a LCD / CRT dual set up. Might ask him if it has given him any trouble.

That's a nice monitor Lamron. I wish I had the 28's at home, but I'd need to get another desk. Oh yeah, and $$ too. Here's what my home setup looks like. That's a 19" LCD and a 17" CRT without it's stand.. LOL I had this same setup at work (but with a 19" CRT) before they swapped out the monitors. Looking between the 2, I never have any eye strain. The only concern I have are the color and brightness differences when I do artwork.

What does it do/accomplish having duals ? Enquiring minds like me want to know .

It's more efficient when you are dealing with multiple windows or programs. I have a 3d program that has several sub-menus inside it that I like to throw over to the other monitor. It saves a lot of time not having to minimize a window to see another.
Also, you can have MOH on one monitor and TeamSpeak or Chat Client on the other.

^^^^^^ What he said..
and doing server admin stuff it is nice to have your Rcon server contol program up on the 2nd monitor so I can see who is coming and going... and when need be quickly switch over and kick someone.

When I'm working on a new mod (like the super cool one AIGAD and I are colaborating on now!), I need anywhere from three to ten windows open. Being able to see them all, or almost all at once really speeds things up.
Its also great if you're trying to read the documentation on software you're learning to use. Just put the directions on one screen and the program on the other so you can read and do at the same time.
Or when you're cut/pasting between documents and need them both to be full sized.
Or so you can surf two websites at once (although tabbed browsing is almost as good).
Or ,as AIGAD mentioned, you can push sub-menus to the second monitor and have the entire primary free to use as your workspace.
Or keep program windows open so you can keep an eye on them without being in the way. Like streaming radio, bittorrent, server monitors, taskmanager, an E-Bay auction countdown, etc.
If you've got the deskspace, you can usually find old junky monitors laying around that people will give away just to be rid of them. Its pretty easy to set up (assuming your video card has dual outputs). You can try it for a couple of days with a trashy monitor to see if you like it before spending any money.
