That's very interesting! It's not flying at all, of course, it's a controlled fall, really a steeply-downward glide; at no point can they even travel purely horizontally (unless they find an extremely strong updraft). I wondered how they stop at those speeds, at what is probably 100+ mph, until the last couple of seconds showed them using a drag-racing like parachute. It obviously has to be done in a location in which there is *plenty* of forward room available for the glide, otherwise, it would too quickly necessitate use of the parachute. If I could trust a parachute, it looks like something that I might actually want to try!

the suit they're using also helps them glide along. the air is caught in the webbing under the arms and between the legs, the body is also angled upward so the air can get under the suit and you can glide along while going downward. we use to use loose sky diving suits while jumping. they would slow you down and help keep you from going in a heads down position.

Rocky the Flying Squirrel comes to mind...
notice that there is zero flutter of the flying suit...? even on direction changes.. Me thinks it's a hoax

No hoax. Those glide suits are under quite a bit of tension when they're gliding, so they wouldn't flutter. This looks like alot of fun, I'd love to try it!

I wonder.... if these guys keep doing that and become more comfortable at it, how long it takes for each one to push it just a little to closely to the mountainside, before they become a bug-splat. I could see them getting more daring and then almost nonchalantly trying to touch the side with their hands or something. I've seen long-time carpenters get way to comfortable with a table saw, and then zip go the fingies. It's not like your typical scunned knee if you happen to scrape against the side.... it's all over That is some crazy shhstuff!

Those boys are freaking nuts.... this is just modified base jumping.. the suits work on the same principle as the flying squirrel. ( pvt noticed) watched a show on these suits on one of the educational channels a while back.
On a side note I HAD a cousin a few years back that liked to base jump. Hit a cross draft while free falling and it smacked him against the cliff face at near terminal velocity... It was a closed casket funeral.

...... the suits work on the same principle as the flying squirrel. ..... Yep, that's why I called it gliding. If they didn't have the suits holding them back with the air-resistance, it'd be a simple free-fall (downward). I frequently have dreams where I'm flying, and in my dreams it's a fast and effortless glide over the ground, so this looks like fun.

When I joined the Army the recruiter asked me if I wanted to go Airborne? Whats That? I asked. You jump out of an airplane. Is that SOB still flying? I asked. Yep. then why am I getting out of it? He dropped it.
Fat Boy Don't Jump From a Good Aircraft. or in this case a bridge or other.
Does any one know what B.A.S.E. Jumping stands for? With out googling it.
