I think it's time to replace my hard drive ! Hard drive actually seem to hang up occasionally
I'm Looking at the websites ( New Egg, Tiger-Direct, etc.) I don't understand what I'm reading .
Cache,Latency,Average seek/write time ,etc . I really could use a little info here !
Currently, I have a 60g Drive . And I know that it's a DMA/ATA-100
But that's all I know about it.
A little help from the LamronsPlayground Data Base , would be greatly appreciated !

I never got too wrapped up in all the techno jargon. I just bought what was spec for the mo-board that I got at that time. You will be able to get quite a bit of storage for a good price. you say that yours is ata 100 but is that the max your board can use? Did you build the CPU yourself or is it an off the shelf unit? www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136217oh and if I'm not mistaken the cache = more is better (ie 16mb is better than 8 mb) And if the latency is like that of memory the smaller the better. They both have to do with speed of accessing the info on the HD. I do know that the 10k rpm drives are loud...I have one but they are sata 150.

Thanks ! Now another question !?
Do I need a Hard dive that big ? Is there any difference in performance/longevity Of a bigger versus smaller hard drive ?
I ask because I only have about 24.6 GB used on my drive right now, That's probably the most I have had used at one time . I back-up and save to DVD disc and clean unused/unneeded very often.
I just want to know that it's not like old cassette tapes for example. Where you could get a longer play cassette but the tape itself was much thinner and didn't last as long.

Thanks ! Now another question !? Do I need a Hard dive that big ? You do if you want to install Vista or McAfee on it. ;D My new puter came with a 233 gig hard-drive. 76 gig out of that is already claimed by Vista, MOH, COD4, and another game that I like to play occasionally. I also have a backup Seagate drive that has 36 gigs of backed up pics, funny videos and other important files I want saved. One of the reasons that those Seagates can offer the long warranty is partly because of the ball bearing drive it has, this also makes it very quiet. So, no you don't need a hard drive that large, but it is nice to know that the extra space is there if needed. This 233 gig drive only takes my virus software about an hour to scan, which doesn't affect me much as it is scheduled to scan at 5 in the morning. ;D

I am completely unsold on Vista at this point ! I already have the full McAfee package . Like I say, I always transfer important stuff (pics, files, etc. ) to removable disc. And have been thinking of getting an External hard drive , strictly for storage also . My machine won't handle the new stuff , ( COD4,etc.) So space really isn't a problem ,I think I am looking more at reliability at this point. When I'm ready to get a new computer , I will make sure it has the large hard drive and capabilities of running new stuff, Vista, etc . Right now, I just want to keep it running with least potential for problems . Thanks A Ton for your help people !

That would be an EXTREMELY usefull adapter if you were trying to transfer data to a new computer or doing any type of repair work. I don't need one at the moment, but I'm tempted to buy one anyway.

I agree... that is a very useful device, especially for around $20USD.

exactly, I am tempted myself..just to have laying around for when I do a build..or upgrade a harddrive..saves monkeying around temporarily hooking up a drive.

What is it--a huge hard disk that you dump your old hd to, and then it dumps to your new hd? All without either old or new hd's having to be in a running, booted up pc?

no.. it is an interface cable that allows you to externally power up a pulled hard drive connect it to your pc (not sure about mac) and run it as a external drive or transfer all your data from the pulled drive to your new installed drive.
very cool ... I may have to get one of these.
