Point taken DS and as always it is a good one. But I have to ask, Do you feel that Canada and the UK are a "communistic society" because of their answer to health care? I thought I would ask because I have been reading this thread daily and I don't feel that is what you meant. No but I believe their health care systems and tax structure are. I was just talking to a guy from the UK on TS the other day. He pays for several trips to the US every year to "stock up" on things because it is cheaper here than there with everything being taxed so high. What I do not want is us sliding down the slippery slope into communisim. I am not for big govt. I am not for govt mandating our lives and micromanaging our every move. We live in the land of the free, and I wish to keep it that way. Many good men have died so that I have that right. I would gladly give mine so that my children and grandchildren could continue to do so. I wretch at the thought of voting in people that want to strip those rights from us.

Sorry folks. I have been busy the last week or so and have been neglecting the computer. Anyway, someone asked why around 64% of my cheque disappears. Well, that is mostly due to the Federal government swiping my loonies! Some of it goes to union dues, blue cross, pension etc. I pay around $1500 year to the provincial gov't and $2000 to the local guys in property tax. Before taxes, depending on overtime, I make between 105K- 120K per year.
Some things stood out for me in this interesting thread. There seems to be an assumption that there is sub par medical assistance in the U.K. , Canada etc compared to the U.S. How so? The Western world regularly exchanges technologies, treatments, procedures, and hardware etc. We all learn from each other. Another odd trend is that all kinds of U.S citizens come to Canada for prescription drugs at a cheaper cost, and Canadians go to the U.S for prescription glasses.
Another thing that none of you guys solved for me is why do 96% of the Americans living in my city vote for MCCain? Most are in the oil business though and have ties to Houston. Is it a Texas thing?
Oh, and we ain't communists!! Nor is our health care system!!! I do like to look at some of the hot Russian tennis gals though...
I seem to have opened an emotional subject for everyone. Perhaps time for another. What could it be...hmmmmm??? Let me think about it and get back to you. Oh wait, how about why do Canadians say "Eh" at the end of every sentence. Why do Americans say "Huh and warsh (wash)", and Brits forever mis pronounce words like Derby (they pronounce is DARBY). While we are at it, what's up with the French???

DS I don't know who you were talking to but he seems a little off on the facts, yes we do pay towards perminant meds, but if your on ANY kind of benifit or under 18 or in full time education (no matter age) you get them FREE now I pay 96 pounds a year or around 50 dollers for a certifacate that allows me all my meds for that year so a round trip to the USA around 300 dollers plus the duty on what I bring back 17.5% and any other exspences would kinda wipe out that 50 dollers would it not?? this certifacte is for ALL meds if you don't get them free (see above) More info here www.ppa.org.uk/ppa/ppc_intro.htm

Hey Prez there is always military service...lol Free room and board, good heath care free, and money for college when you separate, as well as 100% tuition assistance while your in. Thats if you can look past the evil dictator thing...lol just sarcasm on my part. That Is how I and many others have done well for ourselves. I have been out for over 9 years and have sense obtained 3 technical diplomas and only have three classes left to get a 2 yr degree. All paid for by my GI bill. in three years of school The VA (they pay the GI Bill) payed me $36,000, tax free to go to school. One of the perks of my service.

Believe me IDA, I have thought about that for years. I was going to go into the air force when I was 17. But I didn't like the idea of being rushed through basic to be shoved into war. I don't mind the war, thats what you risk by joining. But its being rushed into war with not as much training that stopped me. Maybe they have changed by now, but when I was looking into it, that is what they were doing. But 99% of the people I've talked to said the army, navy, marines, etc was the best thing they ever did.

Woody, Garp, I meant no disrespect for your great countries. I did not mean that you are Stalin like. I meant that the redistribution of wealth for the good of the people is a communistic value. I do not see how it could be viewed any other way. If you pay out of pocket or off the tops of your pay checks into system that provides everyone equal "free" health care then yes that is communistic. If it works for you all I am happy for you. I do not think it would set well here in the states, it would crash our stock market as stock holders bail to save their money. People would probably riot en mass as their earnings disappeared down the maw of the govt pocket book. If you grew up with the system in place it probably does seem quite normal to you. A famous saying I am fond of remembering. Those that ignore history are doomed to repeat it. This great feel good socialist experiment was already tried here. It failed. The USSR.. FAILED. This is a pretty good definition of socialism that I speak of. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SocialismAnother article I found about Socialism in America.. Some of it may ring a few bells and sound familiar. www.u-s-history.com/pages/h1669.html

My son joined the Marines last July, He received the full 13 weeks of basic training every Marine gets, then another month of advanced infantry training ALL Marines must complete. He is now in schooling for UAV electronics. You are correct. If you join the armed forces that is their purpose. To fight our countries battles. You more than likely will see action at some point in your career, depending on your MOS. I have never heard of our soldiers being rushed through basic. Not since the days of WWII. Be sure you are willing to put your life on the line for those that stay at home. If it is your calling God Bless you for it. If it is not your calling, there is no shame. We need people here also to keep our great nation functioning and producing.

He is now in schooling for UAV electronics. That is really good to know, I might look into it again. Although I've gained a little weight since I got out of school. Maybe I'll do a little of my own training first before I join up. A few people at my work, and some mutual friends have told me they were at basic for 1-2 months. Most of them said 6 weeks. They said they were told even before they got in that they were gonna rush through basic. Maybe they were an exception, but that led me to believe this was happening country wide.

Don't worry about the few pounds..... They have a great diet in basic training! They bust your ass for about 4000 calories a day...and feed you about 3000..... By the end you are all muscle and at your perfect fighting weight! Uncle Sam Wants You! the Pvt.
