Prez,
As a former soldier and a current employee working on an Army base. There is no rushing through it. Army basic is usually 6-8 weeks depending on the base you go to for training, and the final job you pick. The few pounds should not be a big problem. As stated before you will burn off what you take in. Also if your too big you get the "Fat boy Tray" no snacks just the basics. be sure to choose your job wisely. Some convert well in to the civilian world and others do not. I can only speak of the Army but if you have any questions I will try my best to answer them. Oh you can go straight from civies to flying helicopters in the Army. Just a thought.
