OK...wait a sec...had a thought. I was putting together a swing set for the kid I got for free...not recycling to me...it was just free...but then I got to thinking...hmmmm what will happen in the near future when nut job animal right people start bitching about virtual pets!!!! OMG save the batteries! Spade and neuter your virtual pets so they don't spread!!!! Anyone seen sponge bob episode where everything in the FUTURE is painted chrome? lolol All this started to go through my head after I slit the top of my finger open on rusty metal killing who knows how many platelets and neuclyii....hmmm split a blood atom, well no, but It sure felt like it must have contracted an iron disease of some sort.... but yes, the swing set is up >END TRANSMISSION<

lol....nah the wife made me take the lesser expensive, but still unfordable route. But to clarify further, I'm collecting junk parts to build a vertical axis wind turbine. Hopefully I'll get to the point I can run my garden lighting and pond pumps and heaters. Not for recycling porpouses, but rather I like making cool stuff out of junk and a chance to "stick it to the man " as Jack O'neil would put it lol At the least I'll end up with just a nifty looking windmill. I'd been thinking about it for awhile now and was looking up some things. That's how I found the VCR hack in the other post, was also looking up some junkbot info, but this link here is what really spurred the rest of the wind stuff on further. www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-a-Wind-Powered-LED-Out-of-a-VCR/I actually wanted something tougher and less prissy that a pinwheel "and I didn't have one lol" so I just went ahead and built the whole test windmill model of parts from a vcr and a cd coaster. It works pretty good too. As soon as the wind blows hard enough to generate 3v, the LED lights up. www.10webs.com/digitalmilitia/Majors/pics/VCR_Windmill/100_5023.JPGwww.10webs.com/digitalmilitia/Majors/pics/VCR_Windmill/100_5025.JPGI just used a larger gear to epoxy on a larger base for the fan blade. I'mmmmmm pretty sure at some point I will be able to add electrocution after tetanus to the self induced hobby pain and suffering list

If you run into problems let me know, I have been researching wind turbines for a long time now, That is the business I am wanting to start. Small turbines for the home and farm.
As you said not for a green purpose, but cost benefit too me and those that will use them. They pay for themselves over time, they last for many years, and I like the idea of being off the grid if possible.

I'll keep that in mind. I've got to get to the junk yard to find an alternator at some point, but I'd like to play with different types of generators. I had to post to find out what he tore the generator out of or if he bought it, but this is also the design I'm going to start with to force the neighbors to look at. www.instructables.com/id/Faroun-Lenz-v2-Vertical-Axis-Wind-Turbine/All kinds of neat diy wind stuff out there. I even found a web page that a guy was making his own windmill blades with a chain saw lol

Those vertical axis wind turbines are pretty interesting. They can be put in small spaces and the design eliminates all the complexities of having to make it rotate to face into the wind. However, they are terrifying to observe up close!

An alt will work, but better to find is a generator off a tractor if your wanting DC power. It eliminates the need for the converter to charge a battery bank. You will still need a voltage regulator and dump switch though.
Been toying with vertical axis for a bit, about the easiest way to make the wind veins is with pvc pipe cut them to the shape and size desired.
Also living in town make sure too check your local ordinances, too ensure it is legal for you too erect a wind turbine where you live. Some towns have height, and eye sore laws restricting them.

Actually I was under the impression that all the new alternators had the bridge rectifier built in. I came in to check on something but I just picked up another satellite dish and a ten speed for a $1 from one of the junk guys that comes down the alley. He said yup, that's a nice little bike there and I said not for long LMAO I've already got the wheels off. and in the process of taking the reflectors of and adding them to my reflecting pole collection...It's just a 4x4 post covered with reflectors. and yes they can look menacing especially when your not sure what the blades are made from when it's spinning.

some do and some don't depends on the model of car they are intended for. Also it is good to know the min rpm it must spin before the field activates and it produces a charge.

Whadaya know, no cuts or abrasions yet ;D I was working on a tail and swivel, then realized 2 things. I need to come up with a decent pole. and 2, the tail I was trying to drill holes in was a piece of super hardened bed frame angle iron and dulled a bunch of my drill bits before I realized it But since I was just testing around a little, I bolted it to my greenhouse frame for now. www.10webs.com/digitalmilitia/Majors/pics/windtests/100_5029.MOV

Hey DS, I'm trying to find some detailed info one how a windmill can be used as a water pump. The problem is that I haven't yet been able to find any how to's and how why's lol. The only info I can really find is this picture www.thebackshed.com/Windmill/articles/SouthernCross/Dscf1427.jpgon this page www.thebackshed.com/Windmill/articles/SouthernCross.aspIs the 2.25 inch pump a big homemade checkvalve & what is the end of the push rod connected to? I need to find a diy on this pump assembley. I'm wanting to scale this down to suck water out of the ducky pond and spit it into the filter. well, the windmill will be scaled down anyway I'm just trying to wrap my head around this as to what it looks like on the inside. edit - I did mange to see a video of a piston pump pipe, but don't have any info on how to make one ______________________________________________________________________ In searching for this info, I did run across some diy hydrolic ram pumps that would greatly speed up watering my garden from the rain barrels. And possibly use this with the wind pump. www.instructables.com/id/Hydraulic_Ram_Pump/?ALLSTEPS______________________________________________________________ I just found this also. Not that I can get away with a moat in the yard, but I thought it was pretty cool.

I will look into it for you. Mostly what I have run into is actually producing electricity with the wind mill to run a water pump.
You could use a direct link to crankshaft piston pump.
Wind turns blades..... blades turn crankshaft... crankshaft makes push rod with piston go up and down.... water flows.
