The assimilation continues! Read on, you Linux geeks and those of you who keep proposing that consumers should buy an empty box! www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9012644&pageNumber=1(Excerpts follow; full story by link above): March 09, 2007 (Computerworld) -- Not too long ago, ad agencies, design firms and other creative companies were about the only businesses that widely deployed Macintosh computers to their employees. But for a number of reasons, word of the benefits of Apple Inc. hardware -- and software -- on enterprise desktops is now spreading.
Macintosh computers appear to be making market-share gains in the home, opening the door to similar success in the enterprise.
"We find that most PCs that are sold as enterprise desktops are actually stripped-down, lightweight versions of the computers the same companies sell to home users. These machines lack the basic technologies needed in the modern enterprise. Apple, on the other hand, simply doesn't sell a minimalist computer whose predominant 'feature' is its price point, aimed at businesses or any other market."
For instance, you can't buy a Mac without at least 512MB of RAM, Bluetooth, 802.11g Wi-Fi networking, Gigabit Ethernet, FireWire and even a remote control -- and that's before you consider the included software. None of the base business models of HP or Dell even comes close to that.
There is no comparison between Apple's "consumer" machines and the consumer lines of its competitors. All of Apple's machines are ready to move into the enterprise, depending on the job at hand. The company's simple and elegant product line, which is also highly customizable, will be Apple's entree to the business market -- if IT decision-makers can get over their prejudice against equipment that's traditionally been aimed at consumers.Hallelujah! Preach on, Brother! Can I get a witness?

Hmmm.... MACs seem to be trying to be more and more compatible with PCs, not the other way around. How long before MAC becomes just another brand of PC?

that is what I was thinking...they switched processors...they run Windows and windows apps...hmmm...I do not see PC's running a boot manager to enable a Mac os..strange. Mac users are happy yet they are coming to us. Assimilation is almost complete...welcome to the world of PC's!!

LOL, are you guys ever in for a big surprise. This means there is now no excuse for wasting your money on a windows machine--you can get what you really need, a Mac, and have the comfort-blanket knowledge that you can run windows too (if you "need" it), and it's that obstacle, the alleged "non-compatibility" issue, that has kept Macs from being the big seller they should be, but now that is going bye-bye for good. Windows better do something significant really soon if it hopes to continue to compete.

Denial is to be expected, is one of the first stages of grief over the realization of the loss that you are going to experience. Just keep your chin up and try to maintain poise.

Uh huh, come over here on your TS and say that, snakeboy! Oh, that's right, you're not through re-imaging and de-fragging and re-installing all your Windows software and OS, a-gain, to let you do that.

A. Buy an empty Windows box. B. Buy all the software, or install all you already bought, that you need for it. C. Buy all the heartbreak and trouble and lost man-hours that Windows brings with it. D. Add it up--it's way more than the few--truly few--mere dollars more the Mac costs with the software on it you need and the ability to run all the software you already own. The mac mini is about $500 new and will run off your existing keyboard, monitors, etc. but is a full fledged hot machine, so don't give me that "costs more, less filling" crap.
But you guys are missing the Big Picture. Windows persists in simply becoming more Mac-like by the day, but still falling behind, while the Mac just gets better and now will do what the Windows boxes will (without even trying). With Mac prices falling steadily, and the new Windows OS failing steadily, you will see the Market shift even more than it already is doing! Windows is de-evolving, Mac is evolving.
It's like the old problem I've see as a physician medical examiner--when applying for a Chief M.E. job for some NE state, the salary is waaaaay too low. "But by law, no state employee can make more than the Governor!" is the excuse. "Oh, yeah?! Well, I can do his job. He can't do mine. Of course my salary should be way more than his."
The Mac. Simply Worth More. Simply better.
"You are coming to a sad realization. Accept, or decline?"

Already came to my realization long ago. IM POOR lol. Just a curious Question? What happens if your all mighty mac hard drive takes the final crap out and your warranty exspired the day before it died... Are you screwed out of all those programs that came loaded on it? or does mac send the source disks with the it?
just food for thought.

Hey, the Mac is a class act! Yep, disks come with it (OS and Software Restore, DVD's) but of course you'd have to do any updates all over again. With your serial number of your unit or your OS, you could download them, too. Now, it COULD happen, but with the 8 Mac's I've owned since 1984 (don't know about the oldest, but the other 7 are still running just fine), I've never had a hard disk go bad. In fact, the ONLY thing that has gone bad was a complication of a voluntary action--a motherboard got hurt when I had an upgrade chip put on and it was done sloppily with solder getting onto circuits, etc. I returned it to the company that did it and got a full refund and they fired the dude who did the work, and I got back a new motherboard at no cost, and I used the money instead just to buy the newest Mac with an even faster processor, etc. Oh, and I had a keyboard that took an iced tea hit, and I've worn out some mice, but the basic units--Woot! I back up my data often (sheeesh, except I need to back up my iTunes Library, though, haven't done that--nearly 2000 songs on it) but I don't really worry about my applications. With fast internet and the orginal discs, it's a minor nuisance to reload the software. Over the years, the only thing that has given me any trouble was (curiously enough? ?) a Microsoft (translation: in bed with the great whore of Babylon, Windows) product--MS Office, when I went from OS 9 to OS X. MS Office pitched a hissy fit trying to install until I deleted the new version, all old versions, and the trial version that came on the Hard Disk. Then it installed just fine.
