I have read up on this alot and found a site that put it a little less technical. this is just for people that might be wanting to upgrade and can't understand what they see after spending the money. I realize it is a few months old..but is a reasonable explanation. www.dansdata.com/askdan00015.htm

If I understand that correctly, the other installed devices aren't actually using that memory, but they're just using the memory addresses. I was intending to go 4GB on my next computer, but it sounds like that would be a waste of money, especially if I'm using a high-end graphics card or dual graphics cards.

depends on the OS you use...if you 64 bit...they say the problem should not be there. For myself I have 2 gig installed and I might buy myself my second graphics card as an early X-mas gift..so effectively I have used 2.5 gig of addresses...but the mem I have in is on sale right now for $40 after rebate...poop.Stupid Win-dohs!

I know I don't understand exactly what this guy is saying... but what it sounds like to me, is that I can buy 16 gig's of ram but only show, and have an available 3 gigs. It doesn't sound like it will hurt anything, I would just be wasting 13 gigs of ram.
In my case, Pukeway (Gateway) only saw fit to give their clients 2 slots for Ram. That makes things rather interesting if we are strongly suggested to match our Ram card upgrades evenly. Evidently 1-2gig and 1-1gig placed into my two mem slots is frowned upon.
I figured that since the memory cards are getting cheaper in cost, I would just buy, (which I ordered already) the two 2-gig cards and I would be comfortable in knowing I would only be getting 3 gig total.
Am I even close to correct on my understanding with this?
(At least the Geek guys that I talked to at Best Buy got the part about 4gig working for the 64 bit operating system and the 3 to 3.5 gig for the 32 bit.... <sigh>)

For not understanding anything you just read, you pretty much came through understanding what he was telling you. So what you said is true, you'd be wasting 13gigs. And DON'T EVER MISS MATCH MEMORY!!!! If you have 2 slots, use the EXACT same memory in both slots. Some mother boards have 4 slots, so you can put 2 different kinds of memory in. The 4 slots run as a kindof pair. You can put in 2 1gigs, and 2 512megs and it will run great.
Computers are picky aren't they lol.

OK here is something I have not wanted to admit, but since Mar brought it up here we go.
A couple of Months ago I bought a 1 GB of RAM for my computer and even took the damn thing apart and got it in, which ALOT easier then I thought it would be. I still can't get it to work.
I am afraid I got the wrong thing. I bought it off a guy at work and thought it would work since it is the same type. Another of mine bought the same kind and it worked in his computer and yes he has the same kind of computer LOL.
I bought a 1 GB DDR PC-2700 128x64 HIGH DENSITY DDR Whatever the hell that means.
And I have a HP pavilion a 720n Whatever the hell that means LOL. I tried too look it up best I could and I think I need a PC-2800 or at least think.
Thank you Mar for bring this very emotionally sensitive subject for me. I will now go ball up in the corner with my blankie while you all have another good laugh at my computer ignorance.

sorry ...(chuckle...) Rookie...(chortle)...I didn't mean to upset you. HP's are very fussy on their memory though...your friend might have had 2 different batches of RAM. I did a RAM upgrade on an HP for a guy and the shop I deal with was nice enough to give me four sticks to try. The third stick worked in it so I called it quits right there.

HP' and some other brands are overly finicky when it comes to upgrades. So bad in fact that they are the reason I decided to never buy an off the shelf system again, except a laptop maybe.

sorry ...(chuckle...) Rookie...(chortle)...I didn't mean to upset you. I knew this would happen. STOP LAUGHING AT ME!!!! LOL You said you had 4 sticks? Were they all the same type of sticks? Are HP's that fussy?

yes they are...so much in fact that in some cases they recommend replacing both sticks rather than adding one. I tell people with HPs, Dells etc to take them to a computer shop for memory upgrades..they can try their inventory to get one to work.

HP is about as bad as Gateway anymore for upgrades...
this will make pres. cringe... I am running one stick of 1 gig and one stick of 512.. runs like a charm no mem problems here.. but then again I do not have a proprietary system.
defiantly build your own if you can.. or buy one from some one that can... you will have much less headaches at upgrade time.

that will work if it is not a dual channel mem configuration..in some cases it will work with a dual channel board but the BIOS will automatically drop it out of the dual channel. I have seen systems like that..and the one actually ran better after I removed the 512 stick.

I noticed a good performance boost when I replaced the 512 stick with the one gig... also made a huge difference when I installed the pci-e vid card and disabled the on board video processor.. that freed up a lot of memory... they were done at diferent times. vid card first then the memory.. noted a boost with each upgrade.

Yep, DDR, DDR2, and coming out already DDR3's are not interchangeable, and yes, as everyone has been saying, computers and operating systems can be very finicky.

h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00069442&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=431077&lang=enhere is your computer I assume Rook...but the memory is going to depend on the Processor you have...up to XP3000 took 2700 Ram...an XP3200 was PC3200..so what CPU do you have? there are several different manufacturers of ram, and they use IC's from other companies..so even if you bought what you thought was persay Azen PC2700 ram...yours may be that but have Samsung IC's while the new had Hynix (manufacturers of Integrated Circuits). In some computers this is totally incompatible, that is why it is sometimes easier to take it to a shop for those comps so as they can try several different batches. Right now I run mostly OCZ ram which is fairly consistent in their manufacturing...have 2 running it...and one running Corsair Extreme..but I am eyeing up the Crucial Ballistix PC8500 for this rig....I should be able to go to about a 20% oc..as opposed to the 10% I now run.. www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=BL2KIT12864AL1065plus a little bling..
