Yasser Arafat was a scum ball, talking peace to the worlds face and organizing terrorist activities behind the scenes. To think otherwise is denial of proven fact. That they bestowed a Peace prize upon him is to sully the reputation of the prize it's self.

Red, you are certainly entitle to your opinion.... despite the venom with which you spew it. True, one can catch more flies with honey than vinegar. But I'd rather point out the absolute CRAP which even more strongly attracts the flies.

I've been away from the forums a lot this week so forgive my tardiness....
As for Carter: he bought into the naive lib mantra of "hey, let's just sit down and talk".... with guys like Arafat & Castro.
In Castro's case he duped Jimmah into accepting prisoners, the criminally insane, diseased dregs of Cuban society as "political prisoners"...all 250,000 of them. It was called the Mariel Boatlift...Quaint sounding isn't it...? Well, I witnessed firsthand the destruction of the Miami area forever in 1980 as they ALL landed in south Florida. All thanks to Carter and his (at best) naive view of how things work. The term "useful idiot" was made for our boy Jimmah.
Carter seems to be either clueless or really doesn't give a hoot about giving international outlaws like these guys Credence....Regardless he needs to shut up and keep pounding nails instead of running his idiotic mouth.

Castro did not dupe Jimmy into this boat lift. It was the Peruvian, Spanish and Costa Rican embassies that took on the first wave of refugees. That is how the Mariel Boat Lift started. When the port was opened by Castro for any and all that wanted to leave Cuba it was then that the boats started to head for Florida. Also, your number of immigrants and criminals are a little off. ( see below ) During this period, approximately 125,000 Cubans arrived at the United States' shores in about 1,700 boats, creating large waves of people that overwhelmed the U.S. Coast Guard. Cuban guards packed boat after boat, without considering who the boats were carrying, and without considering weather or life jacket safety, making some of the overcrowded boats barely seaworthy; 27 migrants died, including 14 on an overloaded boat that capsized on May 17, 1980. Upon arrival, many Cubans were placed in refugee camps, while others were held in federal prisons to undergo deportation hearings. Some were later discovered to be violent felons released from Cuban prisons, but only 2% or 2,746 Cubans were considered serious or violent criminals under U.S. law and therefore were denied asylum.

No, they were quietly placed on buses headed north; to Arkansas, to Wisconsin, etc. They were literally dumped with little processing or supervision. So, perhaps the official number is lower. The net effect however, has been a legacy of Cuban & then, South American led corruption of South Florida culture; at the hands of Jimmy. Whether he was duped or complaisant the net effect is the same. History cannot be re-written enough to vindicate the worst President ever to take the Oath of Office. The Pvt.

Let us look at more of the same information from your source. Showing that it was the Carter administration that began ties with Castro which allowed the boats in.
Cuba agreed to the release of several dozen political prisoners, and allowed Cuban Americans to return to the island to visit relatives – a privilege that had been denied to Cuban citizens living abroad.
Initially the Carter administration had an open-arms policy in regard to Cuban immigrants, and Cubans were immediately granted refugee status and all the rights that came with refugee status. Public view was initially favorable for the Cuban political refugees. However, during the Mariel Boatlift that changed; Cuban refugees were increasingly seen as undesirable illegal immigrants. This, paired with pressure to allow Haitian rafters to be granted refugee status, pushed the US government into action and would serve to heighten tensions between the two nations.[1]
Remember, all, that Wikipedia is user-supplied information, and Wiki entries are thus not necessarily correct or valid. Many are created or fleshed out by those who have a strong bias on an issue, and that position can frequently dominate the wiki entry. Those that are the best have external reliable sources and links referenced. I use WP a lot, but I always have to remember this caveat. I am not passing judgment on the Mariel Boatlift wiki entry either way, just reminding everyone of the situation. Oh, as an unrelated issue, you might find this interesting--it's the first I've heard of it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Carter_rabbit_incident

i'll add my 2 duck cents to this one. yassar arafat was a terrorist who talked peace, but he spoke with 2 faces. the other one was sending out terrorist attacks. one of his old LT's. is a friend of mine and the col.(my son). his name is sammi bandra. he use to plan and pick his suicide bombers for yassar, until he got caught by the isreali military. they tortured him and left him for dead in the desert. he survived when some one found him and took care of him. he then left the PLO and his muslim religion. when he became a born again christian, he realized how wrong he had been and now is working with a church group (ACOP) that we have been with for a few years. he runs an orphanage in bethlehem (palestinian district of isreal) and talks to many muslim youth about peace . he has gotten youths to listen and drop their stones ,it isn't a large group but it is a beginning. he's bringing some of them to canada in the next few weeks and will be staying with us while he's here.

DS, your bold text color and underlines are cute but obviously sarcastic. My bold print and underlines were meant to cut through the meat of the post. There is no room for that kind of sarcasm in a discussion where people give their opinion and learn from other's opinions or facts. I have observed that with your posts in the last few months. You are either flat out mean, rude or somewhat smart@$$y. However, I am reading more on this time in history and learning that I may have missed the mark ALOT! I am sure that this forum is not a place to belittle or humiliate people, rather a place to educate and debate.
Correct me if I am wrong!

no I meant no sarcasm, or malice. I added color and underlining to show the parts of the article that support my position. The explanation before the quote was to let you and everyone else know it was from the same wikki article you used.
I'm sorry if you take my points as rude or offensive. I state it how I see it and refuse to sugar coat it. I hate political correctness and will have no part in it.
Your feelings are your own to chose. Sorry if you chose to take my posts offensively.
